FINALLY… beautiful sculpted skates for SL!

I’ve been looking for nice-looking roller skates in SL for a long time, like really nicely textured and sculpted ones, and I’ve even sent notecards to a couple of shoe designers who weren’t interested in making any ;__;  I know I’ve asked pestered Gogo several times over the past year or so if she knows of any nice roller skates, but the conversation would always end the same way:  we’d both agree that no one had yet made any traditional roller skates that were also good-looking sculpts.

Almost a week ago, however, Gogo IM’d me to ask if I’d seen the new skates ad from Pixel Mode. She passed me a copy of the ad and then I pretty much just said something stupid like AHHHH  YAYYY back to her. Here’s why:

Seriously, how can you look at that and not think, MUST HAVE!? 😀 So, I ran over to Pixel Mode, stared at the vendor in admiration for a while (Tya Fallingbridge made this cool discotheque-ish set-up for it) and then paid my L$450 for the most beautiful sculpted roller skates I’ve seen yet in SL.

The shape of the boots, wheels, toe stops, and laces are really nicely done. The tongue part of the boots kind of extend upward and the laces are left undone. When you click the skates, a blue dropdown menu lets you change the colors of the sheels, toe stopper, and laces.

As the ad states, your purchase includes two pairs of skates; one white and one black. For each pair, there are actually three skates included: one for your left foot, and two for your right foot. One of the right-footed shoes is scripted with a skating animation, while the other one isn’t scripted at all so that you can use another AO with your skates.

You are definitely going to want to use a different skating animation HUD, or AO, or whatever, because the one simple skating animation included isn’t that great; I wasn’t thrilled with the way it made my arm completely cut into my av’s torso:

i don't like this skating animation

The skates are No Modify, which means you cannot drop a different skating animation into the shoe.  This being the case, you pretty much have to use a separate HUD/AO.  I did a bit of shopping around to see what other skating HUD and AO choices are out there; the only one I could find was the L$650 rollerblade AO sold at Sine Wave. You can call me cheap if you like, but I’d already spent L$450 on the skates and didn’t feel like dropping another L$650 to have a decent skating animation.

So, what to do?  Well, I’ve had Skoopf skates since 2007, though. (Heck, who doesn’t have Skoopf skates?!) It’s easy enough to use the script and animations from your Skoopfs to create your own makeshift skating HUD to go with your Pixel Mode Roxy Rollers.  If you’re not familiar with how to go about doing this, here are some quick and super-easy steps, complete with pictures 🙂  This will take maybe two minutes to do, and your result will be like this:

Click on the images to see bigger versions of them on my flickr stream.

1.  Drag your right-side Skoopf skate from your inventory, to the ground.  You want the right side because this is the one that carries all the scripts and animations.  Right-click the skate and select Open from the wheel menu, and select Copy To Inventory.

Makeshift Skate HUD 01

2.  You should now have a folder in your inventory called Skoopf Ultra Roller Skates (Right), or something like that.  You can go ahead and delete that right-footed Skoopf skate you had rezzed earlier, and don’t worry about losing it because it should be a copyable object.

3.  Now rez a cube prim, and rename it to whatever you want your HUD to be called; I chose to name mine Melanie’s Skate HUD and textured it with one of my favorite pics.  Drag all of the items from that Skoopf Ultra Roller Skates (Right) folder into the Contents tab of your cube prim.  Be sure to double check and make sure all of the scripts, animations, and notecard have made it into the cube.

Makeshift Skate HUD 02

4.  Right-click > Take the cube you’ve created.  It will now appear in your inventory, in your Objects folder.  Go ahead and move your HUD into the same folder as your Roxy skates to make it easier to find later.  Now right-click the HUD object in your inventory, select Attach To HUD from the contextual menu that appears, and then select Top Left to attach the HUD to the upper left corner of your client.  (Or you can attach it elsewhere, whatever your preference is.)

Makeshift Skate HUD 03

5.  Your client screen should now look something like this:

Makeshift Skate HUD 04

6.  You can reposition and resize the HUD to better fit into that spot by right-clicking the HUD and then using the prim-editing interface.  After moving and resizing my HUD, this is what it looks like on my client:

Makeshift Skate HUD 05

Now you’re all set!  And since your HUD is made of a single cube prim, you can make it as tiny and unobtrusive as you want (I personally hate having a lot of HUDs cluttering up my view).  Click your HUD once and the blue dropdown should appear that will let you turn it on, and now you’ve got all those Skoopf skating tricks ready to be used.

If you don’t own any Skoopf skates and would like to use the scripts and anims for your Roxy Roller skates, you can pick up a pair at the little vendor in front of Caroline’s Jewelry, which is right across the way from my store.  If I recall correctly, they’re L$75.

There is a completely free alternative, too.  TP in to Abranimations, and you should see a freebie board near the landing point.  One of the freebie items is a pair of roller skates. These Abranimations freebie skates work in such a way that you must use the included HUD in conjunction with the skates, though, so you will need to attach two objects instead of just one. Overall, I personally prefer the Skoopf script/anims. ^_^

Now all we need is for Pixel Mode to make some nice, traditional-looking ice skates for us… 😀

look of the day: baggy pants!

I think we’ve all seen the ugly baggy pants around SL, and yeah I’m not afraid to call them out for what they are: UGLY! Stacked torus prims do not make for nice baggy pants!

One of the things I picked up at Bare Rose on my recent spree (yes, I went a little spend-happy there, hence three BR posts in a row :p ) were the lowrise heavy cargo pants set. I actually saw one of my friends wearing them and I had to have them! They’re mostly sculpts, with lots of pockets that have buttons and zippers, and flexi straps and a belt. You get black, blue, brown, green, and pink pants, plus there are a few cropped tank tops included.

You can click on the image to see a larger version on flickr:

lotd 2009-07-11

As always, Bare Rose prims are No Copy, so exercise care when editing. I found that I had to do very minimal editing; most of my editing work centered around the belt.

Here are a couple of closer looks at the prim details on the belt and pockets:

lotd 2009-07-11a lotd 2009-07-11b

If you like the baggy pants look, then another store that has some nice ones I’ve seen is [ JP ]:dsg (JP Design), owned by Jasper Potez. I haven’t picked those up yet, but I probably will; they’re scripted with texture change and the belt has a cute little iPod-ish prim attached to it. I think it’d look cute and sassy with a bikini top!

Btw, I was camping for fun stuff like gas masks and machine guns at Sick when I took these pictures, and used a Sine Wave dance animation.  I like how the Stephanie hair from Truth moves.  🙂 Truth is a lean, mean, hair-making machine!!! I’m guessing most people already know this, but just in case you don’t, get thee on the Truth subscribo, now. His hair’s too good to miss.

sexy rolled up sweaters from bare rose

See, this is what I love about Bare Rose. In addition to being damn cheap, you can get all sorts of different looks out of what June Dion has to offer. Yesterday’s foray into scary sexy was fun, hehe, but I was in the mood for a more mainstream look this morning.  Who knows what tomorrow will bring!  😀

rolled up sweater

Bare Rose has these great little rolled up sweaters with sculpted attachments. As usual, everything’s modifiable and no copy, so you can edit to fit but exercise care while doing so. There’s four sculpt attachments altogether: two for the parts that are rolled up around your arms, one for the turtleneck, and one more for the part that is rolled up around the chest, just above the breasts. Editing was super easy; the only adjustments I had to make was to reposition the neck prim slightly and to lower the collar slider on the jacket layer.

For less than L$200, you get the sweater in a whopping six colors: black, blue, green, red, purple, and pink. Since they’re transferable, you can share with your alts! :p I’ve only shown black, blue, red, and green in my pics. It should be noted, these don’t come with shirt for placing under the sweater… you need to find something in your inventory to go under. Or you can give everyone a peep show :p

Cool New Casuals at Laqroki!

(Before I start, full disclosure: I work at Laqroki [customer service]. I chose to apply for work there [back when it was RaC] because I love their skins. When I finally made it into Second Life roughly a year and a half ago, I spent two weeks searching for my perfect skin. It took me that long to find the right skin because in addition to wanting something that had a light, fresh look without heavy makeup, I also wanted a darker skintone that befitted my Filipino, Chinese, and Spanish ethnic mix. I’d found RaC very early, and after looking at countless demos after two weeks my choice was clear. ^_^)

The talented graphic designers behind the Laqroki brand, Mallory Cowen and Winter DiPrima, have opened the doors to their new apparel shop, something I’ve been looking forward to for a while now! I’m usually somewhat prone to writing a lot but this time I will try to let the pictures do most of the talking. 🙂 Speaking of pix, if you are on my flickr contacts list then you should be able to view the large versions of these images (they are kinda big lol).

Laqroki Skinny Jeans backview

And the ever important jeans question:  will your ass look good in these?  Yes, it will :p  One of the things I always notice about jeans and pants in SL is whether the back pockets sit on your rump where they are supposed to, or if they’re kind of melting off your behind and onto the backs of your thighs.  I’m happy to report that the pockets on these are placed where they ought to be 😀

And men, you have definitely not been left out of the party.  There’s a really nice selection of men’s clothing and accessories ^_^

A look back at some 2007 SLRFL goodies

SL Relay For Life (RFL) activities will be starting up again soon, and I for one am looking forward to getting some limited edition goodies while knowing that my money is going towards an important cause!  The SLRFL Clothing Fair will be kicking off in mere weeks, you can read more about it at their blog.

Thinking about SLRFL made me go back through my inventory to take a look at some of my favorite RFL items that I’d picked up last year.

This cute set of bikinis came from Sand Shack Surf Co. and artilleri:

2007 RFL kinis

First Impressions had these amazing pink suits that I couldn’t pass up.  I loved that the shirts came on two layers and there were prim attachments like the necktie, blazer button, and sleeve cuffs:

2007 RFL fi pink suits

Also from First Impressions was this set of sheer blouses inspired by the legendary Edith head:

2007 RFL fi edith

And last but not least, this gown from analise that I *had* to have when I first learned about it:

2007 RFL analise gown

There were soooooooooo many limited edition lovelies that I recall came out last year for RFL!  Get your wallets ready, because I just know there’s going to be tons of must-haves this year, too… after all, the pics above are but a mere, miniscule sampling of what came out in 2007.  Speaking of which, what were your favorites?

Read past the cut for info on other items used in this post ^^

Candy House and other new hair goodies

Wow, lots of great hairstyle goodies came out over the past few days, plus I came across a really cute hair store called Candy House. Here’s a bunch of my favorites…

ETD Marisela and Armidi Roxy

I love the hair at ETD because the styles there almost always fit my avi right away. If I ever need to edit ETD hair, it’s usually just some minor change like moving a prim ever so slightly so that it doesn’t cover up an ear. Upon visiting the newly remodeled store, I was immediately drawn to the romantic-looking Marisela hairstyle which you see pictured here.

Using my Armidi giftcard, I was also finally able to treat myself to the Roxy style that I’ve been wanting for a while now. ^^

Another hairstyle that I adored is the Berri2 by Truth. I didn’t buy it for my main avi because it didn’t quite look right on my shape, but my altie sure looks adorable in it. 😀 There were actually a bunch of new styles that just came out at Truth and the demos are free, so it’s definitely worth your while to take a look there.

While running around some random Japanese sims, I came across the adorably named Candy House, which is owned by the equally adorably named Marina Puff. Candy House has more of a cozy boutique feel to it, with roughly a dozen hairstyles. What’s great about Candy House is that you get all the available colors in just one package for just 120L, and as if that weren’t plenty of value for your money, some of the packages contain the hairstyle with different types of bangs… again in each color.  Awesome stuff, really!

All right, instead of writing a whole lot more about the hairstyles I grabbed at Candy House, I shall simply let the pictures do the talking. 😀

Candy House Mocomoco

FYI — this Mocomoco style has texture change hair accessories on it. You simply click on each part to cycle through the textures. This hair is modifiable and so I plan on eventually loading some of my own patterned textures in it.

Candy House Yoko Dango

Candy House Futatu Musubi

Candy House Half Up Hair

BP big bomb hair

And oh my goodness… I am in love with this hair from BettiePage Voyager’s shop in Osaka. After seeing it on Natasha, I HAD to have this hair, even if it meant camping at the BP* lucky chair for it. (It’s not for sale and is offered only as a freebie from the chair.)

************

Okay, and now for a completely abrupt change in subject, (because quite frankly I am too tired at the moment to come up with some clever segue)… I have two cute chairs up for sale at my shop in Juicy (the sim formerly known as La Reina).

:sey and !_Ce_Cubic effect

As I’d said at the end of yesterday’s post, I had more goodies to blog from :sey.

Clicking the images will take you to their respective flickr pages where you can view larger versions. SLURLs and credit info are at the end of this post.

sey tidori

This eye-catching number is called the tidori 2 coat. While one would think this dramatic mix of patent leather, lace, silver metal parts, patterned material, and a generous helping of black feathers (!) would seem visually cacophonous, it’s all actually pulled together very nicely by limiting the color palette to black and white.

Since the coat is already so visually engaging, I kept the remaining part of the outfit simple with skinny black pants and black ankle boots.

sey tidori 02

The coat features a belted flexi-prim skirt, prim sleeve cuffs lined with black feathers, two pouch attachments that go on either upper arm, a sculpted prim collar, and a hoodie that’s given a black patent leather texture and more black feathers. A closer inspection of the upper arm pouches reveal a leather zipper slider, white lace, and silver prim buckles.

sey tidori 01

The upper part of the coat is on the system jacket layer. I noticed that the texture stretches a bit over the breast area, causing the texture to look a little muddy in that area, but it’s a very minor quibble of mine that I can easily overlook. This coat has so much flair and attitude, it’s hard not to love it. 😀

Loved it so much, I went and splurged on the tidori pink coat as well:

sey tidori pink

There are other color options available as well: red, blue, yellow, and two others that I’ve forgotten (sorry). The coat also comes in red plaid as well as an interesting “black wave” pattern.

cubic effect 02

cubic effect 03

This next jacket from Ce Cubic Effect features a cable knit texture that shows up very clearly on the sculpty prims it’s been applied to.

The first thing that grabs your attention about this jacket is it’s incredible shape. Thanks to sculpties, designers have been creating prim attachments with realistic shapes for collars, sleeves, wrist cuffs and the like, and they’re often used to enhance clothing that goes on the usual system layers. A few designers, such as June Dion from Bare Rose, have been taking sculpty clothing even further, crafting entire outfits out of prims. mirai Jun of Ce Cubic Effect seems to be following suit; her store inventory include coats and an entire dress made of prims.

I tried to get shots of this jacket from all sorts of angles so that the great shape of this piece shows through. It’s been endowed with a figure-enhancing blouson shape, something that’s simply not possible on a system layer clothing article. the same pouf-ish effect is used on the sleeves so that it looks as if you’ve pushed the sleeves up your arms slightly. The neckline is also given a great sculpty collar shape, creating an opportunity to show off some of the more dramatic necklaces you’ve got stashed in your inventory.

The areas where you see the material “gather” are actually where the sculpty prims end, exposing the system jacket layer texture that lies beneath it.

A word of warning: people with somewhat bustier/thicker avis may want to see this jacket in person before making the purchase. My own avatar, while not the tiniest one around, is definitely on the slight side of the sliders and in spite of this fact I still needed to edit my shape. Yes, the prims on this jacket are all modifiable, but for some reason mirai chose to give them mod/no copy/transfer permissions, so I was hesitant about editing the prims without having the insurance of a copied backup first.

What I needed to edit were my avi’s breasts. Yes, they’re not exactly large to begin with :-p but it wasn’t the size that I had to edit; rather, what I found I needed to do was increase the cleavage a little bit so that they wouldn’t poke out through the sides of the jacket prims. Here’s a picture showing my avi wearing the jacket with and without the edit:

cubic effect 01

The system jacket layer has got my avi covered, but the difference in the clarity of texture rendering between the jacket layer and the prim is quite noticeable and I didn’t care for it. A quick adjustment on a single shape slider was all that was needed, though, so I’m quite happy with how it turned out. 😀

KK Outfitters

A new line of woolly scarves and beanies was set out recently at KK Outfitters in Plush Kappa. The scarves, which include flexi-prims for the parts that hang down, come in a lot of different color combinations. The beanies also come in a variety of colors and sport several different logos on the front.

If you’ve followed my blog at all, then you may well be aware that yours truly is one hell of an indecisive person. (Case in point: it took me one whole hour to decide on what breed of dog I wanted from Zooby’s; after I decided to get a lab, it took another agonizing hour to choose between the black, the chocolate, and the yellow. Gogo can testify to this because I pestered her via IMs the entire time.)

Being confronted with the quantity of choices offered at KK Outfitters normally would’ve guaranteed that my avi’s feet would be planted on that store’s premises for a considerable amount of time, but in reality it took me only a few minutes. That’s because they’re priced so affordably, I just bought them all haha. :p (Note: these were all the colors that were available at the time I started on this post; more color options will be forthcoming.)

Red is my favorite color, but… I think I like the pink ones best!

KK Outfitters 01

KK Outfitters 02

And yes, it’s not your imagination… aside from the pink ones, those are all the colors representing the different Houses of Hogwarts! Do you know of any Harry Potter fans that treated themselves to the Hogwarts costume offered at Winter Moon? These will go perfect with the school outfit.

What pleased me in particular about these scarves is the fact that you get them pre-set in two styles. You can wear them backwards as well forward, without any fuss!

Also pictured below are two of the beanies, worn by Ary. My favorite is the one with the skull and crossbones. To get a larger view of these images, just click them and you’ll be taken to their respective flickr pages:

More goodies at D!ff

I found out that there were some newer items at D!ff so I ran over a couple of days ago to check their store out. Cute stuff! I picked up a couple of sweaters that have these great sexy necklines, a couple of funky plaid print pants (say that phrase with me really fast three times in a row, hehe :p ) and a blue version of that bra’d cami I fell in love with the first time I hit their store. (Credits/SLURLs for the remainder of the items worn are at the end of the post.)

diff cami jeans

I was happy to find that the girls decided to put their excellent cami, now in a pretty blue color, in two versions: with and without the bra peeking out over the top. Personally, one of the things that drew me to the cami in the first place is the bra but that does tend to limit your layering options a bit, if you are into the whole mix-and-match thing. The braless version’s neckline, unfortunately, was cut just a bit too low at the neckline for me to use — I don’t want my avi’s nips showing so I put a white long-sleeve shirt under it for this pic.

The plaid black jeans are going to get a lot of usage, I just know it. When I first picked these up I hadn’t realized just how well they’d end up going with a lot of my tops and T-shirts. Maybe it’s the soft, used-jeans quality of the texture as well as the coloring. One thing to note about these jeans, they are not modifiable, so be prepared to commit to that exact degree of leg flare as shown in the picture above.

diff glitterold

If you were to ask me what my favorite item is this time around at D!ff, I’d have to say it’s the Glitterold Stripe*d Sweater. I love tops that have 3/4 sleeves, as well as blouses that have scoop necks, and what do you know, this sweater features both. ^_^ A perfect amount of cleavage shows, and the prim flower that sits at the neckline draws attention to it. Mhmm, sexy!

diff tintable diff red plaid skull

Speaking of sexy, the Tintable Softe*d Sweater has a V-neck that plunges all the way down to the sternum, baring lots of cleavage. It comes with a couple of prim ribbons that you can either attach to the corner of the neckline, where it will draw attention to your cleavage just in case anyone may have missed it :p or you can opt for the ribbon that attaches to your left hip instead.

Paired with the sweater in the pictures above is the Red Plai*d Skull Capri. This was a true impulse purchase for me; red is my favorite color and I really dug that skull on the left thigh, and the girls price their clothing so reasonably it’s easy to just keep clicking on the Pay option of the right-click wheel. I’ve a feeling these pants are going to get paired up almost exclusively with my collection of shoes from KK Outfitters and my Hybrid neko ears & tail; they all just go together very nicely.

diff tintable 2

Going back to that Tintable Softe*d Sweater — yay for tintable clothes! I’d just picked up this black flower skirt from Kurotsubaki’s location in the neighboring sim and this sweater turned out to be a perfect match once I’d tinted it a shade similar to that of the flowers along the side of the skirt. I’d debated whether or not to make the outfit look a little more demure; layering another blouse under the sweater (since it’s on the jacket layer) would have done the trick.

You can find these items at D!ff, located in the Juicy sim.

Fashion Vote: Petit Ange

Who doesn’t love browsing through the Japanese sims? Seriously, there are so many reasons to adore them. The builds and textures are almost always of a superior quality, what with innovators such as Hansode Miasma behind them; there are tons of whimsical creations being sold, wonderfully playful items that will grab hold of your imagination, such as houses shaped like mushrooms and robots and fishes, headphones made to look like fruits, or umbrellas resembling kalo/taro leaves; the prices you’ll find in these sims are often quite affordable (one of my favorite items is a leather belt bag that I picked up for only L$10!); and of course, the plethora of fashion offerings, a good portion of which are inspired by the fashion sub-genres borne out of the legendary Harajuku area in Japan.

I decided to treat myself to a little shopping excursion at a Japanese commercial sim called Aventi Island. It isn’t really a single island, however; it’s more like the sim is dotted with dozens of tiny islands, and on each of these are a single, different store. This refreshingly different approach to the traditional shopping mall actually made browsing the shops seem even more interesting; it’s as if the act of island hopping lends to the sense that you are exploring and discovering. 🙂

Aventi Island did not disappoint — combing through it yielded a lot of cute, interesting, and inexpensive items. For me, the highlight was landing at the Black Cats/Petit Ange location. Anyone who follows RL clothing trends to some degree knows that one of the biggest “gotta-have-it” items of this season is the sweater dress, and Petit Ange offers a whole bunch of them in both pastel colors and darker, richer colors.

Since I already have the beautifully done Starley II mini sweater dress set from Last Call, I was mainly interested in just the pastel set at Petit Ange. I was admiring the white and the pink sweater dresses, which were 110L each, when I saw the poster advertising all four colors — white, light green, light blue, and pink — in a single package for 390L. 😀 I dunno, maybe it’s the American in me who likes buying in bulk when she thinks she’s getting a great deal, but I ended up buying the set instead of just a single dress.

These dresses come with an insane amount of options; I could almost hear my inventory groaning in protest at the newly added load, there were so many items in the folder. It was a little overwhelming at first, and I would suggest to anyone who buys this set to create a sub-folder for each color. The dress top comes on either the jacket layer, or on a combination of the undershirt/underpants layer. This was a great idea on the part of the designer because the top will look nice under, say, a leather jacket or open coat. There’s also two prim skirts in a large size and a small size, and prim sleeves that attach to the forearms. These have some great fringes at the ends, and the way the sleeve prims drape over the tops of the hands slightly is a nice touch as well. The shading is nicely done, too; there’s a relative flatness to the texture except for some highlights and shadows on the chest area, creating the illusion of figure-hugging knit material fitting smoothly and snugly over the body. The muffler prim also has the same fringes at the end and sways nicely as you move about; I found that if you’re wearing the muffler there’s really no need to also attach the prim collar since it’s almost completely covered up.

In a couple of separate packs, there are yet MORE options in the same pastel colors. One pack comes with knit caps, mufflers with stripes at the ends, and adornments for your sweater, such as a knit teddy bear or a knit corsage. The leg warmer pack also comes loaded with leg warmers in each color, at two different sizes. The leg warmers have been given some nice details, too; the tops have strings tied round them, as if to keep the leg warmer from falling 😀 and the strings are decorated with little pompoms. You can also decide whether or not you’d like to continue the teddy bear motif by donning one of two left-side leg warmers; one of them will come with the teddy bear attached to the side and near the knee.

Overall, I’m quite pleased with these dresses and the additional packs. They weren’t terribly pricey, came with a bazillion options, the pastel shades are quite lovely, and the details like the teddy bears, fringes, and pompoms are really sweet. Petit Ange totally gets my fashion vote for this set.
