Warm clothes for winter

I think I’m particularly fond of items like coats and jackets and other winter-related clothing in SL simply because I never wear these types of clothes in RL. When I TP’d over to Skin Flicks to look for glove layer manicures (I got a French manicure from there when I first started SL and I really like it), my eyes inevitably wandered over to the clothing section where there were some coats and jackets prominently displayed.

Click the following images to view larger sizes on flickr. Credits and SLURLs are at the end of this post.

victoria winter sport

This first outfit is the Victoria Winter Sport Outfit. I definitely took note of this outfit first! The collar, upper arm sleeve puffs, glove cuffs, and pants legs are all made of sculpty prims; the lower part of the jacket is actually on the skirt layer. As you can see, there’s lots of brown on this outfit, and it’s nicely accented with a gold and white scoopneck shirt that’s mostly hidden except for the arms.

I really dug those puffs on the sleeves; they reminded me a little bit of those cute jackets sold at Tuli that I also like a lot. The pants get my seal of approval too, because of the flattering highlighting and folds that have been drawn onto the seat that will probably make any butt look nice.

The items that are on the system layers are not modifiable, but all of the prim parts are, and the whole thing is transferrable. (Wish I’d thought to look here during the holiday shopping season!)

I also picked up the Victoria Winter coat. The coat comes in black, pink, red, beige, and grey; it took me quite a while to decide what color to get before I decided on black. ^_^ I was pleased to discover that it can be worn in two lengths: there is a prim skirt for the longer version, and a system skirt layer for the shorter version. The skirt prims are flexi, while the collar, sleeve cuffs, and the tie above the waist are sculpties.

mnk gifts

Another item I found was this cape from MNK Shop in the Americamura sim. (Gotta love these Japanese sims!) It was love at first sight, what with it’s cuteness, it’s pinkness, it’s fluffy puffy white furballs adorning the neck area, and frilly lacy layers underneath. Even the name given the cape is delicious — they dubbed it the “strawberry chocolate milk cape”.

It’s fun to watch the cape swish around your avi as you navigate about. The cape is almost completely made of prims, with flexiprims for the part that drapes down and sculpty prims for the shoulders and arms (there are two prims for each arm). It comes with a jacket layer item, too, to accommodate your avi’s movements.

MNK Shop has left a bunch of gifts lying around, too. I saw things like belts, a fur shawl, some free poses and an adorable fluffy cat-in-a-box hat. I couldn’t be arsed with taking pics of all of them except for my two favorite gifts, which were the hat and the poses. :p

The versatile White Lacy Shirt at <3 Cupcakes

White Lacy Shirt 01 I am a fan of mixing and matching numerous clothing articles from different designers; in addition to being just plain fun, it’s a way to get creative while expressing your own individual tastes and style.

As a result of this penchant for mixing up outfits, I’ve found that I’ve there are a handful of basic wardrobe pieces that I continually gravitate towards — items like the torn jeans miniskirt from the Last Call Yelena set; my Tres Blah jeans with the oh-so-perfectly shaded derrière; the Naughty Designs classic set of crop sweaters (that are modifiable! w00t for being able to control sleeve lengths); my continually growing collection of sneakers (they look like RL Chucks except for the logo) from KK Outfitters; the basic hoop earrings from Paper Couture (they’re free!); etc. They’re all incredibly versatile, enabling me to build my outfits in a myriad different ways.

I’ve recently added another item to my little list of clothing essentials: the White Lacy Shirt from ❤ Cupcakes! by Mimi Coral. (She’s also got lots of cute dresses — oh, soooo many sweet dresses, you end up feeling like a kid in a candy store!! — but that’s a whole ‘nother story, heh.) It’s incredibly versatile, and not only because of the basic white coloring. The shirt comes on all three system layers plus the underpants layer for tucking under the waistband of your pants and skirts, making it a super flexible and thus great choice for layering with other pieces. The fact that this shirt is also modifiable and copyable just adds even more value to this bargain of a shirt, because now you can create tinted copies. ^_^

The styling of the shirt itself is basically sweet, innocent, and romantic, what with the high collar and lacy front… totally makes me think of Anne of Green Gables stuff. :p The style is hardly limiting, however; you can still pull a diverse amount of looks out of the shirt. Here are a few outfits I was able to put together (credits and SLURLS are at the end of the post); they all use the same shirt (as well as the same Nicola Red Cameo locket from Caroline’s Jewelry; for some reason I felt compelled to keep pairing the two) but I feel they’re dissimilar enough so that you don’t “feel” like you’re recycling the same look over and over:

Outfit 1

White Lacy Shirt 02

Back when I bought the shirt at ❤ Cupcakes!, I also picked up a 2-skirt set that comes in pink and grey. The skirts have a very feminine feel, what with the hip-accentuating buttons along the side and all the gathers and ruffles in the texture. Offsetting this nicely are the dark browns and leaner lines of the boots and the tweed jacket (which has that great torn detail that I love ^_^). Topping it off is a smart-looking capped hairstyle, and I added a turquoise bangle for a just a teensy-weensy subtle contrast. 😀

Outfit 2

White Lacy Shirt 03

In this next outfit, I again layered the shirt under a jacket, but sort of reversed things — this time, it’s the top half that takes on a very feminine look with a hairstyle that is long, wavy, and shiny, as well as a jacket piece that takes on a very feminine form with it’s puffy sleeves and midriff-baring cut. Balancing things out again are the same brown boots paired off with figure-hugging faded jeans.

Outfit 3

White Lacy Shirt 04

After the girly skirts and jacket I wanted a leaner and sexier look, so out came yet another essential piece — the thigh-skimming little black mini skirt. Completing the look is a dark red leather jacket and black pantyhose, along with some rather naughty-looking black platform boots that cling to the legs. In keeping with the somewhat edgy look is the short red hairstyle that deliberately brushes some hair over the right eye. Note: I felt that wearing prim lashes with this look was imperative but texture weirdness resulted in the right eye’s lashes poking through the hair; I remedied this by modifying the set of lashes so that only the left eye would be adorned. (Don’t forget the rule of thumb; ALWAYS make a backup copy before editing!)

Outfit 4

White Lacy Shirt 05

It would be remiss of me to not pair this shirt with a skirt that’s equally romantic-looking. (Shorter avatars, please note that the prims on this particular skirt are somewhat longish; the body shape worn in this image is 5’9″ and the skirt fell to near the ankles.) Because I felt there’s already so much going on with the full shape and texture of the skirt, I refrained from adding any other jewelry and the only other adornments are the red manicure/pedicure on the glove/socks layers, as well as the simple sandals.

Outfit 5

White Lacy Shirt 06

Last but not least: a rather prim and proper yet dainty look that would work at the office. The slim black skirt, black seamed stockings, and solid black plain pumps create a nice long and leggy line. What keeps the outfit from venturing into overly-stuffy secretary territory is the bolero jacket that remains open and thus leaves most of the torso exposed, and that wonderfully feminine hairstyle. There’s so much to love about this hairstyle, not the least of which is the incredibly life-like healthy-hair texture. The waves are nice and full, the bangs are a great length, the double-stranded headband is a nice touch, and I LOVE that the ears aren’t covered, meaning that you can show off your earrings and still get to keep a great length in the back.

So there you have it, five different outfits. They all have their own unique feel despite having been built around the same, very basic piece. The White Lacy Shirt is incredibly easy to work with because of the thoughtful layering options, and at L$75 it’s practically a steal. ^_^

Getting mileage out of modifiability

One of my favorite things about playing dress-up with Second Life fashion is finding ways to put my own personal flavor or stamp on the clothes I choose to dress my avi in. Great blogs such as MichaMi Style Blog and Closet Crisis, along with their readerships, are a testament to the fact that this holds for true for pretty much for anyone who is into SL fashion.

Even with the multitude of designers in SL cranking out their products in a variety of textures and colors, however, if you like keeping up with the latest in-world trends then it’s still pretty easy to run into another avatar who will be wearing the same hairstyle, same clothes, same shoes… hell, sometimes they’ll even be using the same AO stands as you.

What’s an avi to do? Well, one great way to really showcase your own individual sense of style in your outfits is to tinker with the modifiable pieces that are in your virtual closet. Hair, skins, system layer items, sculpty prim attachments… there are LOTS of ways to play with your look if you have modifiable versions of these items.

I recently blogged about how sweater dresses are a current season staple in RL (well, for you mainlanders at least :p I hail from Hawaii, the land of T-shirts, shorts and slippers), and Last Call has the excellent Starley II Mini Sweater Dress set available right now. With five colors thrown into the pack, it’s already a real bargain… but when you consider the fact that everything is also modifiable, that just makes it even better. With a bit of imagination and time spent on editing prims and pushing clothes sliders, one can come up with all sorts of variations on this dress. (Important rule of thumb: Always, always, ALWAYS make a copy of an item before you begin editing it!!) Here are four different looks I came up with, all modeled on my soon-to-be-released Sturmer Harcourt body shape ^_^ (store credits and SLURLs are at the end of this post):

1) Modding Happy

Getting mileage out of modifiability 01

This hip outfit layers the dress over a 3/4 sleeve black sweater and skinny jeans, cinches it with a velour heart-clasp belt, tops it with a smart looking cap and ponytail, and finishes it all off with pretty sculpty boots. To achieve this look, I made the following edits to the cream colored version of the dress:

  • Shortened the jacket layer sleeves
  • Shrank the sleeve prims, rotated them as necessary, and changed point of attachment to the upper arms
  • Tinted the jacket and skirt layers grey
  • Tinted the collar and sleeve prims a slightly darker grey to blend in with the system layers

The dress wasn’t the only item that was modifiable in this outfit, by the way! The right front bangs on the hairstyle (which came conjoined with the cap) were edited so as not to cover up the right eye; the black sweater had it’s sleeves slider maxed out; the jeans were shortened so as not to poke through the boots; the belt’s size was altered to fit the waist; even the lip color on the skin was modified. The only items that were not modifiable were the eyes, glove-layer manicure, and boots.

2) Long sweater layered over a skirt

Getting mileage out of modifiability 02

Another chic fall look that layers the dress over denim again, only this time the denim appears in the form another mini skirt. The neutral tones of the sweater dress, tights, belt, and boots offset the dark blue of the skirt rather nicely.

The same simple edits that were applied to the previous example were made here as well, but without the color tinting. To accommodate the short length of the denim mini skirt, the sweater dress’s skirt layer was shortened a bit via the slider. With the introduction of a single new element and some fast easy edits, the sweater dress takes on a cool new look. 🙂

3) Bold contrasting colors

Getting mileage out of modifiability 03

To change things up from the neutral colors I’d been playing with, I decided I wanted a look that was colorful and visually striking. I once read somewhere that the strongest possible contrasting color combination is black and yellow; I decided to use that contrast concept but tamed it a bit by pairing the already grey-tinted sweater dress in my inventory with yellow pieces. I wanted contrast, not walking bumble-bee, hehe. 😉

Very few edits were required to accomplish this look, and most of it involved color tinting. The scarf (which was a real steal, by the way — 7 colors for only 50L) was originally white and I tinted it yellow. I did the same for the tights, which actually comes in two parts (on the underpants and socks layers). Because the color contrast was already quite visually engaging I felt that adding more accessories would make the look too busy, so I limited it to the chunky hoop-earrings, which are scripted to change color via voice command.

4) Basic black

Getting mileage out of modifiability 04

For this final outfit, I went with the trusty all-black look. Again, this was extremely simple and required very little in the way of edits — all dress layers and prims were tinted a very dark grey (as opposed to completely black, which would have washed out all texture details), and the belt was modified to fit over the hips. The sweater dress takes on a look that is simultaneously cute, casual, and feminine when layered like this over black capri leggings, and worn with a dainty banded hairstyle and ribboned wedges.

So there you have it — four additional looks pulled out of an already great set from Last Call, all of them achieved with just some really simple color tinting and prim edits. Thanks to modifiable pieces, with a little bit of imagination and time spent on editing, you can show off yet even more of your own personal style.
