Fireflies

There’s a new kid on the block at La Reina, the sim where my store is located! Okay, not a literal “kid” but rather, a store called Fireflies. I’d never heard of it before, but I’ve since made myself quite familiar with it. :p

Aside from the fact that the dresses at Fireflies all come from the same designer, Novella Voom, there is a common denominator shared by all of the clothes offered there that strikes you immediately: they are all sexy. Provocatively sexy; elegantly sexy; sweetly sexy… I’m sure I could come up with several other adjectives ending with the “-ly” suffix but I think you get the point.

The textures are beautifully done, too. My favorite from Fireflies, the Scarlet, is a flirty red dress that seems to shimmer, and the clever highlighting and shading on the shirt layer makes it look as if the dress is reflecting light. Then there’s the sheer and lacy Isobel dress with it’s use of clean alpha, which you can take advantage of by wearing yet more lacy underthings; or if you want to be truly daring, just wear the dress by itself and let it show off that lovely skin of yours. ^_^

Here are several of the dresses that my friends Wilma Delgado and Gorgeous Yongho and I picked up while browsing the shop (clicking the images will take you to their respective flickr pages where you can view a larger size; credits and SLURLs are at the end of the post):

Fireflies Scarlet

Fireflies Isobel black

Fireflies Isobel red

Fireflies Isobel white

Fireflies Vivienne

Fireflies Eden

Fireflies Krystal

Fireflies LeiLei

Fireflies Romy

I should mention that everything in this store is very affordable. In fact, the last four dresses shown above are all just L$1 each; last time I checked, there were six of these “dollarbie” dresses available.

To see these dresses for yourself, visit Fireflies, located on the boardwalk at La Reina.

Menswear is not just for men

About three days ago I was looking at Machete and realized I was tired of always seeing him run around barefoot and wearing shorts and wifebeaters. Sure, he’s got a few clothing items: a pair of freebie jeans, a pair of chucks from KK Outfitters, a really nice sweater set from Nylon Outfitters that has more or less been worn to death, and a suit from Aitui that I don’t care for (don’t get me wrong, Aitui is one of my all-time favorite stores because they sell things like kukui nut leis and plumeria blossoms but the giant “AITUI” scrawled along the back of Machete’s neck on his suit collar is a bit of a misstep IMO). Still, I felt it was time to add a little more to his closet. 😀

An impromptu shopping expedition to the Japan sims was undertaken (seriously, they’re given names like JAPAN 01, JAPAN 02, JAPAN 10) and I was not disappointed. Stores I’d never heard of before, such as :sey, -=about=-, and Chase all yielded some fun finds. What made it even more fun for me was the fact that a lot of these clothes will work on girl avis, too.

All right, enough of my jibba-jabba. Let’s see some pics of Machete’s new duds. ^_^ Clicking on the images will take you to their respective flickr pages where you can view larger versions. SLURLs and credit info are at the end of this post.

chase

Machete picked up this black jacket at a store called Chase. There are actually two versions of the jacket included in the folder: one with a white undershirt showing at the neckline, and one that has just the jacket itself so that you can layer another shirt underneath. Prim attachments at the wrists and at the collar finish the look nicely, and the prim attachment at the collar also has some flexi-prim parts that add some realism to the jacket. Machete also grabbed this triple hook pendant. I’m normally not a very big fan of these choker type cord necklaces in SL because I don’t care much for the way they float around the neck, but it works with this jacket since the prim collar masks the whole suspended-in-air thing that’s going on.

about black suit

Another fantastic find: a store that’s simply called “-=about=-“. Machete bought the black suit set there and I loved it so much, I had to get it for myself. The designer at -=about=- obviously understands that people like me are fond of mixing and matching their clothes, because a lot of what’s sold in this store is loaded with layering options.

Take the black suit pictured above, for example: you can choose to wear the shirt tucked or untucked, under a jacket or by itself, and with or without the necktie since the tie is actually a prim attachment. You can also choose to wear a different shirt underneath because the suit jacket is also provided on the jacket layer sans white shirt, but please note that I did find two small white markings on the sternum area where alpha is used (see the left portion of the image above); wearing a white or a very light-colored item with the jacket seems to render the markings virtually invisible but they are there.

As you can see, the suit works just great on a female avatar. 😀 While a lot of this is owing to the way system layer clothing is applied to our avis, the lack of strong pectoral shading and definition helps. (Guys who deliberately choose to have a “normal” avatar that isn’t ripped, cut, and chiseled to so-called muscled perfection will also appreciate this, I think.) To help soften the masculine feel of the suit, I chose to wear a skin that comes with dramatic smoky eye makeup and red lips, prim lashes, red nail enamel, and an ultra-feminine hairstyle that is long and wavy.

about military

In this next picture, Machete is wearing the military jacket and denim jeans also from -=about=-. This jacket is what really made me consider buying the men’s clothing at -=about=- for myself in the first place. The olive green texture is incredibly detailed and has that faded, ultra-comfortable look that immediately makes you think it’s someone’s favorite and oft-worn jacket. Denim items that feature torn and frayed details work well with this weathered look.

Once again, -=about=-‘s designer gives you options. Machete is wearing the “rolled up sleeves” version in the picture above, and my own avi is wearing the version that comes with full-length sleeves. Modifiable prim attachments are provided for the collar and sleeve cuffs. (Remember: always make a backup copy of the prim before you begin editing!)

about shirts

-=about=- also sells a shirt set which, imo, gives a thorough offering of layering options that really ought to be the SL standard by now for both men’s and women’s clothing. The shirt set features a t-shirt that you can choose to wear either tucked or untucked, with or without the plaid print overshirt, and it’s up to you if you’d like for the overshirt to have long sleeves or rolled up sleeves. Hell, you can even wear the overshirt by itself to show off those nice tattoos you’ve got on your chest :p , or layered over another shirt from your virtual closet (provided that it comes with an underpants layer, but that’s not something I see very many menswear designers offering).

I chose the black and white shirt for myself and it’s going to go in my “! Favorites” folder in my inventory. Because I own a shape shop, my avi is often in a state of dress (or perhaps I should say undress) that isn’t considered especially polite when you’ve company… so I have a pair of shorts and a Tableau t-shirt in this folder for quick access for whenever I get unexpected visitors. This shirt makes for a nice and (very) cheap replacement of the Tableau tee. ^_^

sey jackets

This next picture shows jackets that come from :sey. Machete had actually stumbled across :sey in the Japan10 sim, but risey Arai’s landmarks all point to his main store in the Honmoku sim. :sey offers a good variety of jackets and coats, and the first thing you’ll notice about them is the detailed primwork with which they are adorned. Tiny prims, flexi-prims, sculpty prims — these jackets have got it all. If you’re not afraid of primmy clothing and you appreciate attention to detail, then these are worth checking out.

Machete is wearing the Riders Jacket in gold/brown. The word “gold” in the description refers to the metal used for this jacket; risey also sells a version of the jacket that uses silver metal. Nice to have that kind of choice, huh! The jacket comes with a double belt that sports lots of studs, grommets and buckles. This theme of lots of small metal pieces is repeated at the collar and sleeve cuff prims, and is offset by a mixing of different leathers (patent and suede). When you make the purchase, you are given both the male and female jackets, so there’s no need to worry about accidentally buying the incorrect gender version.

The jacket I’m wearing was simply named “leather jacket”. I chose red but it’s offered in all sorts of colors, and you can choose to purchase it either by itself or as part of a jacket and pants set. The leather texture on this jacket has a great glossy look to it and the winged skull on the back is a cool detail. This unisex jacket comes with even more prim attachments than the Riders Jacket, with a collar prim, sleeve cuff prims, and a pair of prims that circle the upper arms. Lots of metal is featured on this jacket as well, but in a less prominent manner; the metal pieces are generally smaller than the ones you’ll find on the Riders Jacket. The metals appear as both prims and as part of the textures; I especially liked the decorative zipper sliders on the upper arm attachments.

All told, I had a lot of fun looking at men’s clothing for my avi. There’s more goodies that I got at :sey that I’ll be blogging later; I’m going to have to start paying more attention to menswear from now on!

Miss SL Tropics update

All right, I did not mean to let this much time go by between my posts regarding the Miss SL Tropics pageant. o.o

The sim filled up very quickly on Sunday; the event did not officially start until 12 noon SLT but ASpiRE Isle was packed to capacity before 11 a.m. The contestants weren’t required to be there until 11 a.m., but I’m glad I decided to go to the site a half hour before then; when I arrived, we were *already* experiencing lag due to the load. 😮

Thankfully, the lag was manageable because the limit was at around 55 people. (I recall being in the SL4B sims with as much as 81 people at a time; the lag at that event was of a magnitude I’d not witnessed before and nor since.) I am quite pleased to report that I never did fall off the stage, not even once, which really is a miracle in my opinion.

The first half of the competition involved three fashion segments: Swimwear, Casual, and Formal. The contestants had a special group IM session held all throughout the competition; the organizers used this channel to communicate with us, helping us with our marks and timing. Right at the beginning of the show, the session was full of nervous chatter! Even after the show had begun, we continued to use the group IM, expressing nervousness and encouragement to one another. It was after the formal event that the IM had begun to slow down; I think we were all so relieved at having finished our three runs that we were all kind of just sitting back quietly, hehe.

All right, so what did I wear? Here we go:

SWIMWEAR

Out of all my three outfit themes, I especially wanted the swimwear outfit to reflect the fact that I hail from Hawaii. 😀 I hadn’t realized just how challenging it was going to be, finding a swimsuit that met all of the criteria I’d mentally listed as requirements: it needed to cover up (no excessive exposure of buttcheeks, crotch, and/or boobs), it needed to look tropical, it needed to be in a color that would contrast nicely with my skintone, and for crying out loud… it needed to not have that goddamn dreadful texture bleed right at the thighs. I gotta tell you, that texture bleed bug is really annoying.

swim

The swimsuit I ultimately ended up wearing is a bikini set from Artilleri called Palekaiko. So far I have been digging the Hawaiian print stuff that comes out of Artilleri; the placement of the excellent textures on pieces with modern cuts (i.e., the halter tops and button-down shirts) really gives the clothing a feel of authenticity. I can totally imagine some local Hawaiian resident putting on one of these items in RL to go to a party or what-have-you, myself included. Another thing about the Palekaiko bikini that pleased me is it’s combination of colors: the light background contrasts nicely with the brown tone of my skin, and the red hibiscus print stood out nicely against the vivid blues of the pageant staging.

What I especially loved about my swimwear outfit were the accessories I’d found at Aitui. The necklace and bracelet I am wearing in the image above are actually kukui nut leis, which are very popular in Hawaii. Aitui actually sells these items as a necklace and an anklet; I simply modified the attachment point for the anklet so that it would go around my wrist, instead.

The blossom tucked above my ear is a common variation of the fragrant plumeria flower. Plumeria trees can be found all over the place on the Big Island of Hawaii. Wearing a solitary plumeria blossom tucked in the hair above the ear, or using the flower to adorn a ponytail or updo, is a very common practice here, and the placement of the flower is also often used to indicate one’s status as being single or not (much like wearing a ring on either your left or right hand). I was tickled to find that the owner of Aitui took this into consideration and packaged two versions of each color blossom: one is labeled “I’m Single”, which will attach above your right ear, and the other is labeled “I’m Taken” and will attach above your left ear. Nice touch, eh? Needless to say, Aitui is now one of my Must Visit stores in SL. 😀

Other items included with this outfit: Grace heels in Pearl from Maitreya, Katie hair in Black from ETD, and Manicure 04 from =RaC=, which is on the glove layer.

CASUAL

We were told that this category was called “Classy Casual”, and honestly, I was a bit flummoxed as to how I should convey a tropical “feel” for this outfit. I was originally going to wear the Auntie Elsie dress from Artilleri, which again has a great Hawaiian print texture. If there’s anything I dislike about clothing, however, it’s being a brand name slave. I already had the Artilleri swimsuit; I wanted to change things up and use something from a different designer for each outfit.

After discussing it with a friend, I ultimately decided on a mix-and-match outfit. While the outfit itself doesn’t exactly scream “tropical”, it is something I would wear to work or a social function here in Hawaii. 🙂

casual

All throughout SL, you will find an abundance of lowrise and ultra-lowrise jeans. Don’t get me wrong, I happen to like lowrise jeans and pants and I own a number of them. Sometimes, though, a girl wants a little more coverage without having to resort to wearing the lower half of a business suit, right? Enter Blaze’s HighWaist Jeans into the picture. They come in a comprehensive 6-color bundle with options, options, and more options. Prim legs, pants layer, undershirt layer, underpants layer, jacket layer… I love it when we’re given all these layers to play with!

The conservative feel of the neutral charcoal colored jeans was balanced out by the sexy bold dark red and plunging V-neckline of the long-sleeve top that comes from ETD’s Red Stripe dress. What’s especially nice about this top is that it comes with a shirt layer that goes under the jacket layer of the top itself, resulting in a looser-fitting sleeve.

Other items included with this outfit: Red Suede boots from SF Design, Angel V hair in Black Pearl from Naughty Designs, Mother of pearl necklace from Caroline’s Jewelry at Lo Lo, and Manicure 04 on the glove layer from =RaC=.

FORMAL

For this category, I was determined to find a gown that would somehow reflect a tropical locale… but how on earth does one go about finding a “tropical” formal gown?? I happily stumbled upon the answer to that question when I took a look at Nicky Ree’s Boutique.

formal

Okay, I actually found two gowns at Nicky Ree that I fell in love with. My first choice was a gorgeous confection of a gown called the Sonata in Fuchsia. It is predominantly a peach-pink gown, but it’s generously accented with yellows, golds, and coppers, and I was immediately reminded of the beautiful sunrises and sunsets that we are regularly treated to here on the Big Island. ^_^ I was convinced that this gown was *perfect*.

Hrmm… well, turns out I was wrong. I can’t tell you how bummed I was when I discovered that the gown did not fit my avi’s skin properly, which brings me to the issue of non-transfer items… but that is for another post. 🙂

Fortunately for me, there was another gown at Nicky Ree’s that was also reminiscent, imo, of the fiery sunsets one can see over the lava fields and deserts of West Hawaii: the Exotic Tangia Ballgown in Red. I’m not exaggerating when I say that the sunsets over Waikoloa and Kona are breathtakingly beautiful; people driving along the highway will literally pull off to the side of the road, in droves, to clamber out of their cars and gawk at all of the oranges, pinks, and reds that streak the skyline as the sun settles into the Pacific.

The gown is primarily a peach color, but has a liberally applied golden sheen that gives it depth. The shape of it is wonderful, too: it has a collar that rings delicately around the throat and tops a very plunging neckline, which in turn draws the eyes down the cleavage-baring bodice to a prim belt that sits at just the right spot to perfectly accentuate the hips, at which point the skirt billows out gently around the legs. In other words, OMGZ this gown is HAWT, hehe. I totally need to find more excuses to bust out this outfit in the future! Dancing, anyone?

Other items included with this outfit: Spring Stilettos in peach from Shiny Things, Tyra hair in Black from ETD, Gold Flexi bangles from the 3 Flexi Bracelets-Gentle Sway set from Caroline’s Jewelry at Lo Lo, Eva Gold Hoop earrings from the 6 Sets: Large Gold & Silver Hoop earrings bundle which is also from Carline’s Jewelry at Lo Lo, and Manicure 06 on the glove layer from =RaC=.

Soooooo… there you have it, the three outfits I chose to wear for the pageant. 😀

All right, now on to the finalists and winner of Miss SL Tropics 2007! Here are the names of the runners-up and their placement:

4th place – Ivette Television
3rd place – Feles Seitan
