Welcome to Kuu Ipo!

I just got a sim!

I’ve named it Kuu Ipo. ย Ku’uipo means “my sweetheart” in Hawaiian. ย I thought about what to name my sim for quite a while, and I know it makes more business sense to name your sim the same as your business? But I followed my heart, instead, and chose a name for it that I love. ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m hoping to share all this space with a few people, so if you’ve been looking for land to rent for your store, I just might have a new home for you! I’m renting out a couple of quarter sims and another parcel that is a bit over an 8th of a sim. Kuu Ipo will be the main location for my own store, Mela’s, as well as the recently revived pose store Poseur, which is co-owned by a team of pose designers. The sim adjoins the popular Juicy Estates area (with sims like Malt, Juicy, Juicy Mirabella, Yabu, and more for neighbors) and is directly side by side with the Juicy De Costa sim.

I am still working on the sim, but here are a few shots and a short video of what’s there so far. Decorating the sim is proving to be a lot of fun!

If you’re interested in renting, please let me know! You can IM me in-world, my SL name is Melanie774 Kidd. Or, you can leave a comment on this post and I’ll get back to you when I’m online again.

Please feel free to visit the sim! ย Kuu Ipo 120, 128, 23

Dark Fairy

I got the Hope for Haiti gown recolor from Kouse’s Sanctum last night and immediately began taking some fun snapshots with it.

For an hour or so, I was a wicked fairy alone in the forest at dusk, up to no good and casting spells for dark and selfish reasons. ย โค

025. casting a spell

dark fairy

I really love Windlight. ย The two shots I’ve posted here are unedited and straight out of SL, save for some cropping adjustments.

I normally don’t wear facelights, but I did bust out my old ones from Gaynor Gritzi that I got all the way back in 2007. ย I’m not sure if she sells her facelights anymore, but every now and then I find them useful for lighting up pictures in interesting ways. ย The lights come with roughly a dozen different color presets, and they’re not obnoxiously bright.

The wings are one of my favorites in my inventory, from Fancy Fairy. ย These are the Bloodvine wings and they’re scripted to respond to chat commands that make them flutter or stand up rigidly.

If you like taking fantasy pictures or if you just plain love flouncing about in gowns, the Hope for Haiti gown is one option to look at. ย Plus, it’s just a couple of bucks that will be sent where help is really needed right now. ๐Ÿ™‚

Vanity Universe 2009 Skin Fair organisers ejecting avatars on suspicion of ‘wearing stolen skin’

A member of one of my SL groups (Fashion Emergency), Sun Marseille, a visitor to the skin fair, was ejected by Nadja Baxter, one of the organisers. She had no idea why, and so sent an IM to Nadja asking why; she was told ‘you’re wearing a stolen skin’. A log of Sun’s conversation with Nadja Baxter is reproduced below:

[17:30] Sun Marseille: why did you eject me?
[17:30] Nadja Baxter: your wear a stolen skin
[17:31] Sun Marseille: nniumm no
[17:31] Sun Marseille: dont be ridiculous
[17:37] Sun Marseille: how do you know what skin im wearing and who are you to boot me without asking me first?
[17:38] Nadja Baxter: sorry i have not time for people like you
[17:39] Nadja Baxter: buy your skins from the original creator and you are wellcome ๐Ÿ™‚
[17:40] Sun Marseille: are you nuts??
[17:49] Nadja Baxter: ask to hwher you bought this skin ?
[17:50] Nadja Baxter: no answer ?
[17:50] Nadja Baxter: no answer ?
[17:54] Nadja Baxter: so where you bought this skin?
[17:56] Sun Marseille: little late to ask me now.. isnt it?
[17:56] Nadja Baxter: is it a secret
[17:57] Sun Marseille: not at all
[17:57] Nadja Baxter: you are very wellcome
[17:57] Nadja Baxter: but whre you buy this shin ?
[17:58] Sun Marseille: im sorry .. but you severly disrespected me.. if you had asked me BEFORE kicking me out .. I would have been nice
[17:59] Nadja Baxter: hum yes that can bee

The skin in question was bought from Le Mode ( http://slurl.com/secondlife/Turnip/56/144/3001 ), created by Milla Crystal.

When contacted, Nadja Baxter declined to comment.

UPDATE: Nadja Baxter issued an apology; the chat log of this is below:

[18:12]ย  Nadja Baxter: iok i sse you buy from a creator
[18:12]ย  Nadja Baxter: so iย  apology.
[18:13]ย  Nadja Baxter: you are wellcome at the fair
[18:14]ย  Nadja Baxter: it is strange for the customuers what is stolen at a skin

Even with the apology, this sort of behaviour on the part of an event organiser is extremely questionable, in my opinion; one hopes that she won’t be quite so precipitous in the future.

Hijacking the Airwaves

Psst… is Melanie gone?

Hey everyone. It’s Whit Korobase. You probably don’t know me but, yeah, I am actually supposed to be here. ๐Ÿ™‚ I work at a design shop called Shelf Life Media in world and we’re helping bring a RL dressmaker’s designs and vision to Second Life.

What does that have to do with Grid Expectations, you say? Well, I’m pleased to announce Shelf Life and Mela’s will be forming a business partnership and we’ll be moving our work space toย the new Mela’s Main Store in Lo Lo.

But before we move, we’reย selling our main parcel in Hattori and wanted to get the word out in case you or a friend were looking to buy a lovely, quiet parcel of PG mainland.

Beautiful sim. Great neighbors.

Beautiful sim. Great neighbors.

Take a look at the pics of Hattori here. It’sย 6144 m2 and holds 1406 prims.ย It also has a nice view of the beach and ocean.

We hate leaving Hattori, for sure, but are quite excited about joining with Mela’s soon.

P.S. We’re not totally leaving Hattori, as we still have an unattached parcel we’re using as a work space. It’s 3072 m2 with 703 prims and we’d entertain an offer for that, too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

‘the love that dare not speak its name’

The other day I visited the Amsterdam sim because Iโ€™d heard there was an art installation set up there (thanks to Keiko for the notecard ^^ ) by Arahan Claveau (RL artist Steve Millar). I went just in time, too โ€” it was the last day of the exhibit. I didnโ€™t take any snapshots, which I am now regretting, but I am sure there are some pictures floating about the internet courtesy of the avid Second Life flickr community.

The name of the installation was โ€˜The love that dare not speak its nameโ€™. It was the kind of exhibit that makes youโ€ฆ well, very uncomfortable. One of the first things I saw when I arrived was a giant, pink pyramid which puzzled me at first but I think I got the message once Iโ€™d pondered on the scenery a bit more.

The whole thing was about the persecution that people of homosexual orientation have faced throughout history and continue to grapple with today, and how a lot of us tend to not want to deal with thinking about it. What I personally got out of it was that it felt a bit like I was contemplating a reflection I was seeing in mankindโ€™s common mirror; a terrifying reminder that we, as humans, not only have the capacity for so much blind intolerance, cruelty and straight-up evil, but that we also will very often gloss over these things and/or look the other way because itโ€™s just plain disturbing to dwell upon these truths.

Some of the imagery was fairly obvious: a gallows platform, with bright pink party balloons littering the ground around it, and blood spatters on images of men that flashed in vivid colors, which to me was somewhat reminiscent of color-changing club strobe lighting. Walking over some of the images prompted a notecard-giver to offer notes with titles such as โ€˜Homophobic Violenceโ€™ and โ€˜Homosexuality Laws of the worldโ€™. That last note was quite an eye-opener; I hadnโ€™t realized that even places like Western Samoa and Tokelau, island countries I’ve always perceived as pockets of Pacific paradise, will hand out harsh prison sentences to people for having gay sex.

About the pyramidโ€ฆ after I gave it some thought, I remembered that most pyramids from ancient civilizations are really basically tombs for the dead. So I was thinking that perhaps itโ€™s a giant grave painted over in pink; a massive monument representing the many lives claimed by hate crimes against gay people, washed over in an unoffensive and cheerful hue that represents a willingness to cover up the ugliness, look the other way and feign ignorance. If you canโ€™t see it, then itโ€™s not really there, right?ย  The neatly arranged pink crosses that looked like they were knocked over and tumbling into the river?ย  Iโ€™m sure they had multiple meanings. One of the ideas that I personally read into it: the hypocrisy of organized religion in general, since our religious leaders preach about love and instruct us to cherish our brothers and sisters, and yet so much of the hatred and intolerance we see expressed towards gay individuals finds its roots in centuries-old religious ideologies.

Anyways, the whole thing really made me think, it raised my awareness a bit more and educated me on the subject and made me question if Iโ€™m being one of those people who choose to look the other way. I really appreciated that; a lot of the art that I see in SL is โ€œprettinessโ€; what I saw yesterday went beyond that. Not that thereโ€™s anything wrong with pretty images (remember, the author of this post is someone who is borderline obsessed with dolling up her avatar), but I really liked that I was looking at something in SL that was thought-provoking, informative, and a strong commentary on whatโ€™s going on in our flesh-and-bone, brick-and-mortar world.

As I mentioned at the outset of this post, I am a bit late in writing about this. The exhibit ran from the 10th through the 18th, and the 18th is when I went to view it. You can see more of Arahanโ€™s work however, alongside that of Nebulosus Severineโ€™s, at their art gallery Arthole (Kress 168, 88, 391).ย  I’m looking forward to seeing more exhibits in the future.

I met M Linden! Well, sort of… lol

asleep on the job

While I was working at Laqroki yesterday, I happened across a newbie Linden. A quick look at his profile revealed that he was freshly rezzed (it was devoid of any other info at the time) so I IM’d him in the hopes that he’d eventually “wake up” and I could help him pick out some new goodies for his avi. After all, it’s not everyday that you get to give a Linden a makeover, right? ^_^

I stood around him for a bit but he never did leave Away status, so I figured I’d take a humorous little pic — the one you see above — and give it the smartass title, “Asleep On The Job”.

Well, guess what! I found out today he’s the new CEO of Linden Lab, lmaoooo… I am going to have to send this pic to him. โค Hopefully he doesn’t reject my inventory offer o.o

Welcome to the top place on the SecondLifeโ„ข food chain, Mr. Kingdon. May the lag not afflict you with too many ass-tachments ๐Ÿ˜€

This jira issue needs your vote! More Busy Mode options plz

I admit, I abandon my avi in SL on a regular basis.ย  Sometimes for hours, even.ย  The amount of times that friends have found my avi on my sky platform staring blankly into space, uncommunicative and unresponding, probably numbers into the hundreds, no joke.

My profile makes it clear to people that I’m afk (Away From Keyboard for those of you not familiar with the term) a lot, but I’ve found that people in general don’t really pay attention to that little tidbit of information.ย  They also tend to ignore the part that says I may not respond to IMs in a timely manner if I’m busy working on something.ย  (Even some of my friends are guilty of this, writing persistent “hellooooooooo??!!”s when I’m working at RaC and helping customers.)

I used to use the Set Away feature a lot, but since all that does is put an “Away” over your av’s head it’s only useful as a visual indicator to people within your immediate vicinity.ย  People IMing you from remote areas have no idea that you’re AFK, there’s no auto-response message… unless you use Busy Mode.

So yeah, I used to use the Set Busy feature a lot, too, until I discovered that it automatically rejects ALL inventory offers.ย  I don’t want to do that, I want to be able to choose to accept the inventory when I come back to my computer.

My friend Vivi pointed to a posting on the jira titled Multiple Levels of Busy Mode, proposed by WarKirby Magojiro:

Busy mode blocks pretty much everything. It’s good for some situations, but not others. For example, when you want to spend private time with a single person, or a small group of friends, and be “busy” to the rest of the world.

Or even the opposite, being busy to the immediate company, while dealing with matters elsewhere remotely.

I’m proposing six different levels of busy mode.

1. Absolute Busy mode. Like we have now, blocks everything.

2. Friends only mode – Would block IMs and inventory offers from anyone who is not on your friends list. People on the list would be inaffected.

3. Important calls only mode – When someone IMs you, they would be displayed a message that you are only to be interrupted for important matters, and given a dialog box asking “Is it important?”. The message would be customiseable, so we can define what important constitutes. This would be a wonderful thing for busy business owners. Who could set the message to something like “Read the manual first, and visit our support website: <url goes here>”

4. Regional busy mode. Would act like the current busy mode, for everyone who is outside the current sim. Everyone in it would be able to communicate with you as normal. Good for when you’re in meetings, or enjopying private company.

5. Local busy mode. Like regional, but even more focused. only people within a user defineable radius (default 50m) would be able to communicate. All others would get your busy mode message. This would be good for private meetings in relatively public areas, like talking in a private room, at a busy party. Or just to avoid overhearing other people’s annoying chat, by setting the radius very low.

6. External busy mode. Blocks everyone within the current sim, only. Those outside it would be unaffected. This would be to allow you to avoid having to communicate with people in the area, without seeming rude. Good for lindens who want to seem busy ๐Ÿ™‚

These all sound like excellent suggestions and I would love to see these implemented.ย  I would imagine lots of business owners would especially appreciate these sorts of Busy Mode options, too.

If you’d like more Busy Mode options, please go to the posting on the jira, log in, and vote on it!

Okies, that’s all.ย  I have to go afk now.ย  :p
