I picked up fri.day‘s freebie ballet sweater a while ago for my alt and I really liked it, so when they held their sale earlier this month I knew I had to get it in black.
After I put on my new sweater, I decided I wanted to dress my av up as if she were heading to ballet class. ^_^ While doing so, I ended up rediscovering some oldies-but-goodies that still look good. You can click on the images to see larger versions.
My Tess hair from LAQ, which works with the hairbase option on my all-time favorite skin, was perfect for this look. I searched for legwarmers in my inventory and unearthed some older BP* “ungry rabbit” legwarmers! These are no longer sold at BP* (hehe, vintage), but the lace versions are still available and Bettie’s got lots of other colorful types available now. I also threw on my Blaze tights (another old favorite) and the cute free flats I recently got at In Her Shoes.
I felt my look wasn’t complete, however, without a shoulder bag. After all, when you head in to dance class, you need to bring things like your shoes, extra hairbands, water bottle, towel, and maybe some jeans for afterward. I rootled through my inventory for a bit to see if there were any shoulder bags that would work, and I found some old Sumi (Tuli) lucky chair bags that I got last year. (I wish she’d make stuff like this again, they’re so freaking CUTE.)
I realized at that point that I don’t have any bag holding poses. I’d always meant to make a bunch of shoulder bag poses but that’s just one of the one-hundred-gajillion things I’ve been meaning to do in SL that I never got around to. I decided that I would do some poses right then and there, and here are the four I did just for this post
I’m probably going to be making these bag poses available later at my store, Mela’s. I dunno when :p
Right after I took these shots, I found out from my friend Vivi that I could get my WinterChoice!2009 CSR cards stamped a day early if I joined the Choice! group. (If you’re not familiar with the Choice! events, please visit here for more info.) I wasted no time and got my cards stamped, and one of the first things I unpacked was the DPyumyum white tiger avatar. Oh my god… this avatar is SO KEWT. Seriously! I fell in love with it and ran around SL as White Tiger Mel for several days <3 and took this fun, short dance vid:
Sweater – fri.day, Ballet Sweater
Tiger avatar – DPyumyum WinterChoice!2009 CSR gift (obtained by redeeming fully stamped CSR card at the Choice! Event Hall)
Tights – Blaze pantyhose
Legwarmers – BP*, legwarmers usagi (discontinued item)
Shoes – In Her Shoes, Bows Bows Distressed black flats
Bag – Sumi (Tuli), When pigs fly (discontinued lucky chair item) [slurl leads to current temp location in the sky]
Skin – LAQ Trisha (hairbase version)
Hair – LAQ Tess; Mau’s & Mej’s, Daiyu noneedle
Necklace – custom gift from the best partner in the world, Carson <3
Poses by me, which I might make available along with the rest of my poses at my store Mela’s depending on how lazy I’m feeling
addendum: People have been asking where the video was shot. It was shot in my workstudio! I use a KMH skybox, with a couple of walls removed and a deck added. The clock on the wall is a freebie from Chronokit.
On October 14, 2009, 9:30 Hawaii Standard Time, Blue Mars Staff and Beta testers had a little get together at Beach City.
I’m pretty sure that most SL residents have heard what Blue Mars is by now, but for the benefit of those who haven’t who might be looking at this post, I’ll just swipe a sentence from the website:
Blue Mars is a free to play massively multiplayer virtual world made of an expanding set of independently operated cities featuring a wide range of entertainment, education, and business opportunities. Register today to get an early look at our open beta and the future of virtual worlds.
In some ways BM is like SL, and in a LOT of other ways, it’s not like SL. It’s also very much in Beta, so a lot of the client’s features are still being refined. Beta testers are encouraged to participate in the BM forums to offer feedback, suggestions, and of course report bugs.
But anyway, back to the meet and greet! Here’s a short video I took; I took it right when everyone was busy making their avs walk or run in circles as a little experiment suggested by Glenn.
There were a lot of avs present, as you can see from the screenshots and video. But you know what wasn’t present? Lag! I’m intimately acquainted with SL lag, and I know that when you’ve got a sim with 35 or more avatars on it, lag is pretty much unavoidable. It seems BM can really handle a crowd; it was mentioned during the conversation at the get-together that they’ve successfully tested 1,000 avatar concurrency on a sim.
Lots of people were saying they want to see the chat bubbles go the way of the dodo bird, or at least be given the ability to toggle them off. I personally have mixed feelings on this. I agree that the chat bubbles are annoying, but the chat history is in need of some improvement in the usability department so until they get that straightened out, I actually find the chat bubbles helpful, albeit annoying to look at.
It was also pretty much unanimously agreed (has been for some time on the forums, actually) that we need names to appear in association with avatars. You basically don’t know what av is standing in front of you until they actually say something in chat.
Some other tidbits that came up during the meet & greet’s discussion: we found out that a lot of the users present at our little assembly have 64 bit systems, the BM staff have been testing streaming media, BM is updated with patches and they’re looking at doing these patches in increments so as to make it painless for users, and there was talk of testing solutions for slower PCs.
I’m glad I was able to make this meet and greet, and hopefully I’ll be able to participate in future ones, too. My guess is that they’re going to try and stagger the times to accommodate people from all over the world, though, so we’ll see!
And since we’re on the subject of Blue Mars, here’s a couple more vids and screenshots. I love the look of the ocean in BM (These are raw screenshots straight out of BM.)
You can see more of my Blue Mars shots by checking out my Blue Mars collection on flickr.
Mon Amie cafe on the Omotesando sim has a really cute limited release called “Active Summer Girl”. It’s a collaboration between Amerie’s Naughty, Uw.st (Uncleweb Studio), and Kana-Na. The pictures below feature the Amerie’s Naughty S&S T-dress, and the Uw.st Giselle hair in Angel shine&mesh pink.
The hair is copy/mod, and the dress comes with two options for the top half: you can wear the prim version, or the non-prim version. This allows you to opt for the body-hugging, snug look or the more blouson look of the prim version.
To see a sample of what the Kana-Na limited edition skin looks like, you can visit Amika Jewell’s flickrstream… or, just visit Mon Amie and check out the free demos. ^_^
When I saw the dress and hair, it immediately make me think, “Ooooh KEWT!” and I knew I wanted to play around with this look a lot! I ended up putting together a short, silly dance music video with a song that’s been stuck in my head for the past couple of weeks. Most of it was shot at Photon Pink’s sim. I pretty much fell in love with Photon’s sim! It’s whimsical and crazy colorful, and should be on your list of places to visit if you haven’t already been there.
Anyway, here’s my vid

Today I had the pleasure of romping about SL as a princess. Yes, I know a lot of RP people would use the pretty gowns from Kouse’s Sanctum to roleplay elves but I’m going to insist on being Her Royal Highness. I headed over to a sim named Pirate Fairy Retreat to take some pics of my royal finery from Kouse’s store:
The first two gowns are the Ryel gown in blush, and the Constanze gown in bubblegum. I’m not sure which one I liked more; I adored the poofy long sleeves on Ryel and the way the colors complemented each other, but I’m also really partial to the diaphanous quality of the outer flexi prims on Constanze’s skirt… they kind of reminded me of fairy wings The second picture shows off the Tempest gown in irridescence; I loved the colors on this one! I also have Tempest in the ocean color; you can get a closer view of the bodice in this next shot:
While looking around the Pirate Fairy Retreat sim, I went underwater and discovered some marine life. I went swimming with a seal, and did it in my gown… because dammit, this is SL and I can do that if I want. :p I might revisit as a mermaid…
Kouse Singh very recently announced a photo contest, and everyone who participates gets an exclusive Mayah Tiara! (If you’ve gone shopping at Kouse’s before, then you already know she tends to include jewelry and tiaras with a lot of her outfits.) Here’s my sneak peek at it, I think Exile’s Love Song hairstyle goes beautifully with tiaras and crowns:
I’m just going to lift her graphic off her flickr and plonk it here in my post :p Click the image below and it will take you to her store blog where contest rules and info are available.

I’ve been looking for nice-looking roller skates in SL for a long time, like really nicely textured and sculpted ones, and I’ve even sent notecards to a couple of shoe designers who weren’t interested in making any ;__; I know I’ve asked pestered Gogo several times over the past year or so if she knows of any nice roller skates, but the conversation would always end the same way: we’d both agree that no one had yet made any traditional roller skates that were also good-looking sculpts.
Almost a week ago, however, Gogo IM’d me to ask if I’d seen the new skates ad from Pixel Mode. She passed me a copy of the ad and then I pretty much just said something stupid like AHHHH YAYYY back to her. Here’s why:
Seriously, how can you look at that and not think, MUST HAVE!? So, I ran over to Pixel Mode, stared at the vendor in admiration for a while (Tya Fallingbridge made this cool discotheque-ish set-up for it) and then paid my L$450 for the most beautiful sculpted roller skates I’ve seen yet in SL.
The shape of the boots, wheels, toe stops, and laces are really nicely done. The tongue part of the boots kind of extend upward and the laces are left undone. When you click the skates, a blue dropdown menu lets you change the colors of the sheels, toe stopper, and laces.
As the ad states, your purchase includes two pairs of skates; one white and one black. For each pair, there are actually three skates included: one for your left foot, and two for your right foot. One of the right-footed shoes is scripted with a skating animation, while the other one isn’t scripted at all so that you can use another AO with your skates.
You are definitely going to want to use a different skating animation HUD, or AO, or whatever, because the one simple skating animation included isn’t that great; I wasn’t thrilled with the way it made my arm completely cut into my av’s torso:
The skates are No Modify, which means you cannot drop a different skating animation into the shoe. This being the case, you pretty much have to use a separate HUD/AO. I did a bit of shopping around to see what other skating HUD and AO choices are out there; the only one I could find was the L$650 rollerblade AO sold at Sine Wave. You can call me cheap if you like, but I’d already spent L$450 on the skates and didn’t feel like dropping another L$650 to have a decent skating animation.
So, what to do? Well, I’ve had Skoopf skates since 2007, though. (Heck, who doesn’t have Skoopf skates?!) It’s easy enough to use the script and animations from your Skoopfs to create your own makeshift skating HUD to go with your Pixel Mode Roxy Rollers. If you’re not familiar with how to go about doing this, here are some quick and super-easy steps, complete with pictures This will take maybe two minutes to do, and your result will be like this:
Click on the images to see bigger versions of them on my flickr stream.
1. Drag your right-side Skoopf skate from your inventory, to the ground. You want the right side because this is the one that carries all the scripts and animations. Right-click the skate and select Open from the wheel menu, and select Copy To Inventory.
2. You should now have a folder in your inventory called Skoopf Ultra Roller Skates (Right), or something like that. You can go ahead and delete that right-footed Skoopf skate you had rezzed earlier, and don’t worry about losing it because it should be a copyable object.
3. Now rez a cube prim, and rename it to whatever you want your HUD to be called; I chose to name mine Melanie’s Skate HUD and textured it with one of my favorite pics. Drag all of the items from that Skoopf Ultra Roller Skates (Right) folder into the Contents tab of your cube prim. Be sure to double check and make sure all of the scripts, animations, and notecard have made it into the cube.
4. Right-click > Take the cube you’ve created. It will now appear in your inventory, in your Objects folder. Go ahead and move your HUD into the same folder as your Roxy skates to make it easier to find later. Now right-click the HUD object in your inventory, select Attach To HUD from the contextual menu that appears, and then select Top Left to attach the HUD to the upper left corner of your client. (Or you can attach it elsewhere, whatever your preference is.)
5. Your client screen should now look something like this:
6. You can reposition and resize the HUD to better fit into that spot by right-clicking the HUD and then using the prim-editing interface. After moving and resizing my HUD, this is what it looks like on my client:
Now you’re all set! And since your HUD is made of a single cube prim, you can make it as tiny and unobtrusive as you want (I personally hate having a lot of HUDs cluttering up my view). Click your HUD once and the blue dropdown should appear that will let you turn it on, and now you’ve got all those Skoopf skating tricks ready to be used.
If you don’t own any Skoopf skates and would like to use the scripts and anims for your Roxy Roller skates, you can pick up a pair at the little vendor in front of Caroline’s Jewelry, which is right across the way from my store. If I recall correctly, they’re L$75.
There is a completely free alternative, too. TP in to Abranimations, and you should see a freebie board near the landing point. One of the freebie items is a pair of roller skates. These Abranimations freebie skates work in such a way that you must use the included HUD in conjunction with the skates, though, so you will need to attach two objects instead of just one. Overall, I personally prefer the Skoopf script/anims. ^_^
Now all we need is for Pixel Mode to make some nice, traditional-looking ice skates for us…

My friend Brianna recently released a new skin named Loreena at her store, Le Pinceau. I think this time around, my favorite makeup is #03, with it’s bright pink lipstick and silvery, slightly smoky eyes. I thought the makeup on #00 was interesting; well, I suppose “makeup” is the wrong word since it’s a mostly nude look but she has sort of a flesh-toned lipliner on.
Clicking on the image will take you to a larger version on my flickr:
Their 75% off sale is still going on, too, so if you’ve been curious about their new store now’s the time to take a look!
While I’m on the subject of skins, L’oring or Lazolli skins (or both? I am a little confused as to what the official name of the brand is, honestly) has a Michael Jackson skin that is probably the best one I’ve seen on the grid thus far. I never really paid much attention to the skin other than to think “wow good likeness” in passing.
Last night, though, while cruising around I saw the avatar name MichaelJackson —— pop up on my Mysti radar. Out of curiosity, I sought him out and said hi, and admired the likeness he’d achieved thus far. (I’m usually really shy about approaching people, but I guess the faux celebrity thing was too interesting for me to just pass by ^_^) I recalled the L’oring (or Lazolli! lol) skin, so I asked him if he wanted to check it out. We headed to L’oring/Lazolli and this is how it looked on his av:
He tried on the shape demo that was offered at the store, but we both agreed his shape was a lot better. Then we did the Thriller dance, haha. A friend of mine recently gave me an attachment that plays a Thriller soundbyte while animating your avatar with the dance from the Thriller music video… it’s fun. If you want a copy of it to share with your friends, let me know and I’ll toss one to you! Just IM me, my name is Melanie774 Kidd. Here’s a quick vid of the attachment at work:
P.s. RIP, Michael Jackson.

When I first heard about the new dojo prefab now available at reBourne this morning, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I simply thought, oh a dojo? Cool. Then I actually visited the sim where reBourne is located, and it’s more than just cool; the dojo and house make for a serene, tranquil getaway spot that I wish I could have in real life. Here’s a short video I put together that gives you a glimpse:
The textures are superb. The details on the lanterns, shoji screens, and tatami mats are perfect, imo. As for the various wood surfaces, bamboo, and roof tiles? Their beauty is in their realism. These aren’t perfectly shiny and symmetrical surfaces; rather, they’ve been made to look a bit weathered and aged. I often find that builds that strive after a sort of “minimal” and “clean lines” kind of look end up feeling a bit cold, but the dojo’s textures and lighting all pulls together very nicely so that the entire build is imbued with a peaceful and inviting warmth.
Clicking on the images will take you to my flickr page where larger versions reside:
You can tell that Danny Bourne put thought, care, and research into the build. I loved the oni paintings that are at both of the scripted sliding door entrances, as well as the white silk brocade on the zabuton cushions at the tea table; the brocade pattern features cranes and sakura blossoms. One detail that I really appreciated about the zabutons is that they’re not textured identically, adding even more realism to the feel of the build. There are more zabuton placed outside in front of the dojo, making it a perfect place to sit with a friend and enjoy their company while viewing whatever SL scenery you might put there. It’s a great spot to put down a sakura tree or two.
Nestled between the dojo and the rustic house is the koi pond. It features small wooden footbridge, several koi fish, lotus blossoms and lily pads, as well as some short and tall grasses. I’ve included both day and night shots so that you can see the lighting at work in a darker setting.
The house is small and simple, basically made up of two split-level rooms. In the main room is a batsudan (shrine) that is identical to the one below the katana stand in the dojo, except this one is larger. There are a lot of windows which have bamboo blinds that are scripted to go up and down when you click them. In the secondary room is a simple wooden furo (bath) that sits on a stone floor; it features a pleasant lounging pose for couples.
Here are some of the specs for the builds:
Dojo – 386 prims (including furniture), 25m X 20m footprint
Koi Pond – 94 prims, 14m X 6m footprint
Asian House – about 160 prims, about 20m X 20m footprint
Visit reBourne to see the dojo, koi pond, and house for yourself!
Kimono – Aoharu group gift (visit Aoharu to see other kimonos, there is a 50% off sale until 7/20)
Hair & hair ornament – old freebie
Kimono AO – Bushidou
Skin – Redgrave Sakura
Body Shape – Mela’s Sae

Fancy Fairy by Violaine Villota
Heads up! This post will have oodles of pics plus a very short video.
All right, so I am still on my fantasy fashion kick, where I’m wanting to dress my avatar in ways that I wouldn’t dress in RL. My last couple of posts in this series were about these crazy cute rabbit costumes from Love Soul as well as beautiful medieval-inspired gowns from Evie’s Closet. ^_^
This time, I’ve meandered into the realm of mystical fairies. The lovely Violaine Villota’s shop, Fancy Fairy, (which btw exists in RL, too! www.fancyfairy.com) comes stocked with a great selection of fairy wings and costumes, and the range of prices you’ll find there will fit anyone’s budget.
First item we have here is the Dew Petal Steel Blue outfit. I was immediately drawn to the beautiful color and texturing of this dress, which almost makes it look as if you are wrapped in layers of diaphanous gauze. Along the chest area are dewdrops (hence the name of the outfit), and the edges of the skirt prims have this gorgeous, gossamer-frail-torn look to them, thanks to some mad-skillz alpha work. And look at those wings! They’re somewhat sheer and move nicely with you since they’re made of flexi-prims.
Like the dress but don’t want to flounce about as a fairy? The dress works great on it’s own — pair it up with some strappy heels and you’re ready to go dancing instead of fluttering. Violaine has thoughtfully included two skirt lengths, the top on multiple layers, and two glitch pants, of which at least one was modifiable (I forgot to check if the other one was modifiable, too, but it wasn’t really necessary since it was already the perfect length to go with the shorter skirt.)
Next up is the autumnal Red Leaf Fairy outfit. The layers on this outfit are simple enough — an asymmetrical system skirt (wear your dress shape unless you want to be a large-bottomed fairy ), a system shirt with a “strap” (dunno what else to call it, lol) going over one shoulder; but my goodness the artistry displayed by the textures is impressive! They’re a delicate blend of browns, siennas, burnt reds, golds, purples, dark blues… really marvelous looking stuff. Again, the alpha work along the edges of the top and the skirt are fab.
As beautiful as those textures are on the clothing pieces, however, the true crowning glory of the Red Leaf outfit are the set of wings that come with it. I know I’m totally going to sound like a broken record by the end of this post… but look at the texture! The gold highlights on the wings themselves, the highlighting along the darker spines, the mottled edges and the alpha where they’re “torn”… gotta love it. Yes, these are flexi-wings, but what makes them special is that they are scripted to flutter via (silent) voice command. I took a short video to show them fluttering:
And you know what? Fairies need lingerie, too. (‘Kay, I just made that up. :p ) This is the Champagne and Roses Fae Lingerie set, just in time for all you romantics who want to celebrate Valentine’s Day. These pretties come with a two-piece bra and panty set, sheer pink stockings, and two corsets that have a lace-up detail along the back.
I personally was super-impressed with the panties, because for crying out loud I dunno how many times I’ve had undies that did not cover up the crotch area as much as I’d like. What’s more, I saw nary a hint of the dreaded texture bleed along the inner thighs that is often associated with panties/bikini bottoms. Amazing.
And talk about comprehensive… every piece is on every layer possible, so you can mix and match these with other items to your heart’s content.
And yes, this would not be fairy lingerie if it did not have the requisite fairy wings These are flexi-prim wings and not scripted.
Fancy Fairy has an ample selection of wings to choose from, and yes, all of them are bloody gorgeous. Pictured above are the Kira Grande White Pearl Goldflexi wings and the Kira Valentine Pink Flexi Wings.
The wings come in two types: “plain” flexi-prim wings (“plain” is in quotation marks, because really, these are anything BUT bland) and scripted ones that will flutter, in a wide variety of colors to satisfy most, if not all, tastes. I believe all of the scripted wings will flutter solely by voice command, which IMHO is great because the last thing I want to do is give up more of my client’s real estate over to space-sucking HUDs.
And finally, we have the Sun Fairy outfit. Guess what! It’s only 1L. You have no excuse for not being a pretty princess fairy now. :p This outfit features flexi-prim wings, sculpted sleeve attachments, beautifully done skirt prims, an off-the-shoulder top with a rouching detail all along the flattering neckline, a gold, velvety-looking corset that’s laced up along the backside, and a some beautiful prim leaves and ribbons decorating the breast. There’s even a glove layer so that you have proper looking sleeve ends that go over your hands.
There’s lots more available at Fancy Fairy, and what’s nice is that the Dew Petal outfits, which come in all sorts of colors, can do double-duty as both fairy and evening wear. You can find the shop in the Fushida sim, or just look up Violaine Villota’s profile and check out her Picks tab where she’s got all her locations conveniently listed.
And one more thing to note — this shop is yet another great example of a RL business that takes advantage of SL in a way that shows some common sense. If you like what Fancy Fairy offers in-world, then you might like what it has to offer in meatspace, as well. Check out the website at fancyfairy.com ^^

This is my first Halloween in Second Life, so I’ve no idea if the rate at which SL’s clothing designers have been cranking out the Halloween costumes lately is the norm… but whatevs, it’s great! Some of the costumes I’ve been seeing come out in the Fashion Planet feed are a real trip.
The more I thought about it, though, the more I realized that I kind of treat every day in SL as Halloween. Yes, my avatar is like my glorified, virtual Barbie. I love dressing her up, and my (bloated) inventory shows it; I’ve even got a special folder marked “Costumes”.
So, just for fun, I made a little costume parade video type thingy. Also in the vid are Vivi, Machete, and Gogo. ^_^ Between the lot of us, we’ve donned a ton of outfits for this vid; I’ll post an update later (when I’m feeling less lazy) to share where we got all the goodies from, just in case you want any of these items for your own Barbie — erm, I mean, avi.
I’ve made a new machinima, yay! This video features a burlesque pink martini glass that your avi can swim in, and omigawd it is just too cute and sexy Have a look!
I really love the martini glass. Seriously, it’s tons of fun to look at. ^_^ The glass was built, scripted, and animated by Hap Underwood and it is currently being sold in three “flavors” at his store. Mr. Underwood may be a relative newcomer to the SL scene, but he is by no means a stranger to animation work; a quick glance at his profile reveals his experience: he’s done design, animation, and art direction work on The Sims and numerous expansion packs, as well as work for notable names like Saban and Disney. I’m looking forward to seeing Hap’s future SL projects!
Check out the martini glasses and other cool scripted items at his store, irkmade, located in the uniquely shaped La Reina sim: La Reina 186, 216, 24
And speaking of shapes, that hot avi you just saw cavorting in the martini glass is sporting my newest shape which I’ve named patterson. Patterson is a gorgeous gal with a very feminine and curvy figure, and she stands at 5’9″. Her wide-set eyes and generous, full lips complete her beautiful, voluptuous look.
You can grab this newest release at my store, also located in the La Reina sim: La Reina 154, 137, 24
