Fancy Fairy by Violaine Villota
Heads up! This post will have oodles of pics plus a very short video.
All right, so I am still on my fantasy fashion kick, where I’m wanting to dress my avatar in ways that I wouldn’t dress in RL. My last couple of posts in this series were about these crazy cute rabbit costumes from Love Soul as well as beautiful medieval-inspired gowns from Evie’s Closet. ^_^
This time, I’ve meandered into the realm of mystical fairies. The lovely Violaine Villota’s shop, Fancy Fairy, (which btw exists in RL, too! www.fancyfairy.com) comes stocked with a great selection of fairy wings and costumes, and the range of prices you’ll find there will fit anyone’s budget.
First item we have here is the Dew Petal Steel Blue outfit. I was immediately drawn to the beautiful color and texturing of this dress, which almost makes it look as if you are wrapped in layers of diaphanous gauze. Along the chest area are dewdrops (hence the name of the outfit), and the edges of the skirt prims have this gorgeous, gossamer-frail-torn look to them, thanks to some mad-skillz alpha work. And look at those wings! They’re somewhat sheer and move nicely with you since they’re made of flexi-prims.
Like the dress but don’t want to flounce about as a fairy? The dress works great on it’s own — pair it up with some strappy heels and you’re ready to go dancing instead of fluttering. Violaine has thoughtfully included two skirt lengths, the top on multiple layers, and two glitch pants, of which at least one was modifiable (I forgot to check if the other one was modifiable, too, but it wasn’t really necessary since it was already the perfect length to go with the shorter skirt.)
Next up is the autumnal Red Leaf Fairy outfit. The layers on this outfit are simple enough — an asymmetrical system skirt (wear your dress shape unless you want to be a large-bottomed fairy ), a system shirt with a “strap” (dunno what else to call it, lol) going over one shoulder; but my goodness the artistry displayed by the textures is impressive! They’re a delicate blend of browns, siennas, burnt reds, golds, purples, dark blues… really marvelous looking stuff. Again, the alpha work along the edges of the top and the skirt are fab.
As beautiful as those textures are on the clothing pieces, however, the true crowning glory of the Red Leaf outfit are the set of wings that come with it. I know I’m totally going to sound like a broken record by the end of this post… but look at the texture! The gold highlights on the wings themselves, the highlighting along the darker spines, the mottled edges and the alpha where they’re “torn”… gotta love it. Yes, these are flexi-wings, but what makes them special is that they are scripted to flutter via (silent) voice command. I took a short video to show them fluttering:
And you know what? Fairies need lingerie, too. (‘Kay, I just made that up. :p ) This is the Champagne and Roses Fae Lingerie set, just in time for all you romantics who want to celebrate Valentine’s Day. These pretties come with a two-piece bra and panty set, sheer pink stockings, and two corsets that have a lace-up detail along the back.
I personally was super-impressed with the panties, because for crying out loud I dunno how many times I’ve had undies that did not cover up the crotch area as much as I’d like. What’s more, I saw nary a hint of the dreaded texture bleed along the inner thighs that is often associated with panties/bikini bottoms. Amazing.
And talk about comprehensive… every piece is on every layer possible, so you can mix and match these with other items to your heart’s content.
And yes, this would not be fairy lingerie if it did not have the requisite fairy wings These are flexi-prim wings and not scripted.
Fancy Fairy has an ample selection of wings to choose from, and yes, all of them are bloody gorgeous. Pictured above are the Kira Grande White Pearl Goldflexi wings and the Kira Valentine Pink Flexi Wings.
The wings come in two types: “plain” flexi-prim wings (“plain” is in quotation marks, because really, these are anything BUT bland) and scripted ones that will flutter, in a wide variety of colors to satisfy most, if not all, tastes. I believe all of the scripted wings will flutter solely by voice command, which IMHO is great because the last thing I want to do is give up more of my client’s real estate over to space-sucking HUDs.
And finally, we have the Sun Fairy outfit. Guess what! It’s only 1L. You have no excuse for not being a pretty princess fairy now. :p This outfit features flexi-prim wings, sculpted sleeve attachments, beautifully done skirt prims, an off-the-shoulder top with a rouching detail all along the flattering neckline, a gold, velvety-looking corset that’s laced up along the backside, and a some beautiful prim leaves and ribbons decorating the breast. There’s even a glove layer so that you have proper looking sleeve ends that go over your hands.
There’s lots more available at Fancy Fairy, and what’s nice is that the Dew Petal outfits, which come in all sorts of colors, can do double-duty as both fairy and evening wear. You can find the shop in the Fushida sim, or just look up Violaine Villota’s profile and check out her Picks tab where she’s got all her locations conveniently listed.
And one more thing to note — this shop is yet another great example of a RL business that takes advantage of SL in a way that shows some common sense. If you like what Fancy Fairy offers in-world, then you might like what it has to offer in meatspace, as well. Check out the website at fancyfairy.com ^^

More goodies at La Reina & Evie’s Closet
Okay, so I know the hunt started like, yesterday, but there have been a few more additions to the freebies/dollarbies that you ought to check out. My friend Vivi shared some skins with me that she’d worked on, and they’re lovely! You can grab them for 1L each at my shop, Mela’s (the first one is my fav <3):
Another reason why you should return to La Reina even if you’ve already been there? Evie’s Closet has arrived! When I found out, my reaction was literally “omgggggg”… because I love her clothes. I have literally spent hours in her shop in the past, contemplating what to dress Medieval Melanie in next. Her designs and textures are lovely.
Anyways, she’s joined in on the freebie madness at La Reina This sweet outfit is free and I might be wrong but I think it’s available only at her La Reina shop right now:
I also love the Devotion gown that I got about a week ago. It made me want to get a castle and a unicorn ^_^
I’d also picked up her Peacock dress. The other two dresses depicted in the following image, however, are group freebies! If you love your avi, you will join her update group
There’s a new kid on the block at La Reina, the sim where my store is located! Okay, not a literal “kid” but rather, a store called Fireflies. I’d never heard of it before, but I’ve since made myself quite familiar with it. :p
Aside from the fact that the dresses at Fireflies all come from the same designer, Novella Voom, there is a common denominator shared by all of the clothes offered there that strikes you immediately: they are all sexy. Provocatively sexy; elegantly sexy; sweetly sexy… I’m sure I could come up with several other adjectives ending with the “-ly” suffix but I think you get the point.
The textures are beautifully done, too. My favorite from Fireflies, the Scarlet, is a flirty red dress that seems to shimmer, and the clever highlighting and shading on the shirt layer makes it look as if the dress is reflecting light. Then there’s the sheer and lacy Isobel dress with it’s use of clean alpha, which you can take advantage of by wearing yet more lacy underthings; or if you want to be truly daring, just wear the dress by itself and let it show off that lovely skin of yours. ^_^
Here are several of the dresses that my friends Wilma Delgado and Gorgeous Yongho and I picked up while browsing the shop (clicking the images will take you to their respective flickr pages where you can view a larger size; credits and SLURLs are at the end of the post):
I should mention that everything in this store is very affordable. In fact, the last four dresses shown above are all just L$1 each; last time I checked, there were six of these “dollarbie” dresses available.
To see these dresses for yourself, visit Fireflies, located on the boardwalk at La Reina.

My inventory is out of control, so I’ve been abstaining from the holiday freebie frenzy for the most part.
No one in their right mind, however, can say “No” to a freebie from Mischief and Icing. The update groups for both of these great stores are currently giving away two very pretty dresses, so if you’re not part of these groups yet… time to join! Janie Marlowe added in her notice this morning that another freebie will be coming out soon, and it sounds like it will be a menswear item. Ooh…
But enough of my yakking. Behold the pressies ^_^ As always, you can view larger versions of these images on their respective flickr pages by simply clicking on them, and SLURLs and credit info are at the end of this post.

About three days ago I was looking at Machete and realized I was tired of always seeing him run around barefoot and wearing shorts and wifebeaters. Sure, he’s got a few clothing items: a pair of freebie jeans, a pair of chucks from KK Outfitters, a really nice sweater set from Nylon Outfitters that has more or less been worn to death, and a suit from Aitui that I don’t care for (don’t get me wrong, Aitui is one of my all-time favorite stores because they sell things like kukui nut leis and plumeria blossoms but the giant “AITUI” scrawled along the back of Machete’s neck on his suit collar is a bit of a misstep IMO). Still, I felt it was time to add a little more to his closet.
An impromptu shopping expedition to the Japan sims was undertaken (seriously, they’re given names like JAPAN 01, JAPAN 02, JAPAN 10) and I was not disappointed. Stores I’d never heard of before, such as :sey, -=about=-, and Chase all yielded some fun finds. What made it even more fun for me was the fact that a lot of these clothes will work on girl avis, too.
All right, enough of my jibba-jabba. Let’s see some pics of Machete’s new duds. ^_^ Clicking on the images will take you to their respective flickr pages where you can view larger versions. SLURLs and credit info are at the end of this post.
Machete picked up this black jacket at a store called Chase. There are actually two versions of the jacket included in the folder: one with a white undershirt showing at the neckline, and one that has just the jacket itself so that you can layer another shirt underneath. Prim attachments at the wrists and at the collar finish the look nicely, and the prim attachment at the collar also has some flexi-prim parts that add some realism to the jacket. Machete also grabbed this triple hook pendant. I’m normally not a very big fan of these choker type cord necklaces in SL because I don’t care much for the way they float around the neck, but it works with this jacket since the prim collar masks the whole suspended-in-air thing that’s going on.
Another fantastic find: a store that’s simply called “-=about=-“. Machete bought the black suit set there and I loved it so much, I had to get it for myself. The designer at -=about=- obviously understands that people like me are fond of mixing and matching their clothes, because a lot of what’s sold in this store is loaded with layering options.
Take the black suit pictured above, for example: you can choose to wear the shirt tucked or untucked, under a jacket or by itself, and with or without the necktie since the tie is actually a prim attachment. You can also choose to wear a different shirt underneath because the suit jacket is also provided on the jacket layer sans white shirt, but please note that I did find two small white markings on the sternum area where alpha is used (see the left portion of the image above); wearing a white or a very light-colored item with the jacket seems to render the markings virtually invisible but they are there.
As you can see, the suit works just great on a female avatar. While a lot of this is owing to the way system layer clothing is applied to our avis, the lack of strong pectoral shading and definition helps. (Guys who deliberately choose to have a “normal” avatar that isn’t ripped, cut, and chiseled to so-called muscled perfection will also appreciate this, I think.) To help soften the masculine feel of the suit, I chose to wear a skin that comes with dramatic smoky eye makeup and red lips, prim lashes, red nail enamel, and an ultra-feminine hairstyle that is long and wavy.
In this next picture, Machete is wearing the military jacket and denim jeans also from -=about=-. This jacket is what really made me consider buying the men’s clothing at -=about=- for myself in the first place. The olive green texture is incredibly detailed and has that faded, ultra-comfortable look that immediately makes you think it’s someone’s favorite and oft-worn jacket. Denim items that feature torn and frayed details work well with this weathered look.
Once again, -=about=-’s designer gives you options. Machete is wearing the “rolled up sleeves” version in the picture above, and my own avi is wearing the version that comes with full-length sleeves. Modifiable prim attachments are provided for the collar and sleeve cuffs. (Remember: always make a backup copy of the prim before you begin editing!)
-=about=- also sells a shirt set which, imo, gives a thorough offering of layering options that really ought to be the SL standard by now for both men’s and women’s clothing. The shirt set features a t-shirt that you can choose to wear either tucked or untucked, with or without the plaid print overshirt, and it’s up to you if you’d like for the overshirt to have long sleeves or rolled up sleeves. Hell, you can even wear the overshirt by itself to show off those nice tattoos you’ve got on your chest :p , or layered over another shirt from your virtual closet (provided that it comes with an underpants layer, but that’s not something I see very many menswear designers offering).
I chose the black and white shirt for myself and it’s going to go in my “! Favorites” folder in my inventory. Because I own a shape shop, my avi is often in a state of dress (or perhaps I should say undress) that isn’t considered especially polite when you’ve company… so I have a pair of shorts and a Tableau t-shirt in this folder for quick access for whenever I get unexpected visitors. This shirt makes for a nice and (very) cheap replacement of the Tableau tee. ^_^
This next picture shows jackets that come from :sey. Machete had actually stumbled across :sey in the Japan10 sim, but risey Arai’s landmarks all point to his main store in the Honmoku sim. :sey offers a good variety of jackets and coats, and the first thing you’ll notice about them is the detailed primwork with which they are adorned. Tiny prims, flexi-prims, sculpty prims — these jackets have got it all. If you’re not afraid of primmy clothing and you appreciate attention to detail, then these are worth checking out.
Machete is wearing the Riders Jacket in gold/brown. The word “gold” in the description refers to the metal used for this jacket; risey also sells a version of the jacket that uses silver metal. Nice to have that kind of choice, huh! The jacket comes with a double belt that sports lots of studs, grommets and buckles. This theme of lots of small metal pieces is repeated at the collar and sleeve cuff prims, and is offset by a mixing of different leathers (patent and suede). When you make the purchase, you are given both the male and female jackets, so there’s no need to worry about accidentally buying the incorrect gender version.
The jacket I’m wearing was simply named “leather jacket”. I chose red but it’s offered in all sorts of colors, and you can choose to purchase it either by itself or as part of a jacket and pants set. The leather texture on this jacket has a great glossy look to it and the winged skull on the back is a cool detail. This unisex jacket comes with even more prim attachments than the Riders Jacket, with a collar prim, sleeve cuff prims, and a pair of prims that circle the upper arms. Lots of metal is featured on this jacket as well, but in a less prominent manner; the metal pieces are generally smaller than the ones you’ll find on the Riders Jacket. The metals appear as both prims and as part of the textures; I especially liked the decorative zipper sliders on the upper arm attachments.
All told, I had a lot of fun looking at men’s clothing for my avi. There’s more goodies that I got at :sey that I’ll be blogging later; I’m going to have to start paying more attention to menswear from now on!

I blogged about Schrottvogel Wei’s new line of bikinis at SJA Customboards just a few weeks ago; if you haven’t visited his store yet then now’s a great time to do so because he’s just set out more goodies, this time in the form of really pretty short-sleeved rashguards.
The new rashguards are colored to coordinate very nicely with SJA Customboard’s existing inventory of bikinis, which is good news for you freebie hunters: remember that free blue bikini? Well, now you can get your hands on a matching blue rashguard, also for free.
Vogel sent me several review copies of the rashguards a few days ago, and I liked them so much that I IM’d him a few times to ask when were they going to be available in his stores. Call me a pest but I was eager to grab the rest of the colors. :p
The first thing that caught my eye about these are the colors and prints. The hues are vibrant and fun, and as I mentioned above they go perfect with the bikinis I bought previously. I also really like these rashguards because Vogel has imbued them with a good measure of realism. They appear to have a snug fit but not without looking like they’re stiff and/or literally painted on. The shading and highlights around the breasts, clavicle, and the shoulder blades is very nicely done, and I especially liked the gentle shading that runs along the spine. He’s put creases on the material in all the right places — they appear alongside the torso, between the breasts, and around the armpit juncture, just like you’d see on the real thing. There’s also some light nipple shading on these just as there’d been with the bikinis, and once again the shading is more apparent on certain colors (white, red, and black) than on others.
The rashguards come on the jacket layer, so if you’re a tattoo enthusiast you can still wear your tats on the shirt and undershirt layers and catch those massive winter waves in style.
You can pick these up at SJA Customboards in Chi. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to grab the free blue one!

I just found out from Gogo (go check out her website btw!) that Eloh Eliot of Another shop! has generously shared yet ANOTHER freebie skin! This one sports freckles, just like the set of skins I’d blogged a little while ago.
The name of the freebie is Le0. I compared it against the Ld demo that I have, and while the skin tone is similar I’d have to say that the Le skin has a creamier, more “glowing” look to it. The shading is great — Gogo and I were going “ooh” and “ahh” over the details. Gogo pointed out the perfect amount of shine on the new lips, and I felt that the shading on the cleavage area and on the knees and legs are on par with some of the skins we see in the $L1000 range. Here are some quick shots that I grabbed (clicking on them will take you to their respective flickr pages where you can look at larger versions):
Go to the Lippert sim and grab your copy of Eloh’s latest free skin at her roadside shop!
Who doesn’t love browsing through the Japanese sims? Seriously, there are so many reasons to adore them. The builds and textures are almost always of a superior quality, what with innovators such as Hansode Miasma behind them; there are tons of whimsical creations being sold, wonderfully playful items that will grab hold of your imagination, such as houses shaped like mushrooms and robots and fishes, headphones made to look like fruits, or umbrellas resembling kalo/taro leaves; the prices you’ll find in these sims are often quite affordable (one of my favorite items is a leather belt bag that I picked up for only L$10!); and of course, the plethora of fashion offerings, a good portion of which are inspired by the fashion sub-genres borne out of the legendary Harajuku area in Japan.
I decided to treat myself to a little shopping excursion at a Japanese commercial sim called Aventi Island. It isn’t really a single island, however; it’s more like the sim is dotted with dozens of tiny islands, and on each of these are a single, different store. This refreshingly different approach to the traditional shopping mall actually made browsing the shops seem even more interesting; it’s as if the act of island hopping lends to the sense that you are exploring and discovering.
Aventi Island did not disappoint — combing through it yielded a lot of cute, interesting, and inexpensive items. For me, the highlight was landing at the Black Cats/Petit Ange location. Anyone who follows RL clothing trends to some degree knows that one of the biggest “gotta-have-it” items of this season is the sweater dress, and Petit Ange offers a whole bunch of them in both pastel colors and darker, richer colors.
Since I already have the beautifully done Starley II mini sweater dress set from Last Call, I was mainly interested in just the pastel set at Petit Ange. I was admiring the white and the pink sweater dresses, which were 110L each, when I saw the poster advertising all four colors — white, light green, light blue, and pink — in a single package for 390L. I dunno, maybe it’s the American in me who likes buying in bulk when she thinks she’s getting a great deal, but I ended up buying the set instead of just a single dress.
These dresses come with an insane amount of options; I could almost hear my inventory groaning in protest at the newly added load, there were so many items in the folder. It was a little overwhelming at first, and I would suggest to anyone who buys this set to create a sub-folder for each color. The dress top comes on either the jacket layer, or on a combination of the undershirt/underpants layer. This was a great idea on the part of the designer because the top will look nice under, say, a leather jacket or open coat. There’s also two prim skirts in a large size and a small size, and prim sleeves that attach to the forearms. These have some great fringes at the ends, and the way the sleeve prims drape over the tops of the hands slightly is a nice touch as well. The shading is nicely done, too; there’s a relative flatness to the texture except for some highlights and shadows on the chest area, creating the illusion of figure-hugging knit material fitting smoothly and snugly over the body. The muffler prim also has the same fringes at the end and sways nicely as you move about; I found that if you’re wearing the muffler there’s really no need to also attach the prim collar since it’s almost completely covered up.
In a couple of separate packs, there are yet MORE options in the same pastel colors. One pack comes with knit caps, mufflers with stripes at the ends, and adornments for your sweater, such as a knit teddy bear or a knit corsage. The leg warmer pack also comes loaded with leg warmers in each color, at two different sizes. The leg warmers have been given some nice details, too; the tops have strings tied round them, as if to keep the leg warmer from falling and the strings are decorated with little pompoms. You can also decide whether or not you’d like to continue the teddy bear motif by donning one of two left-side leg warmers; one of them will come with the teddy bear attached to the side and near the knee.
Overall, I’m quite pleased with these dresses and the additional packs. They weren’t terribly pricey, came with a bazillion options, the pastel shades are quite lovely, and the details like the teddy bears, fringes, and pompoms are really sweet. Petit Ange totally gets my fashion vote for this set. If you’re not afraid of a little extra bulk in your inventory and are in the market for lighter colored sweater dresses, you may want to pay a visit to Petit Ange’s store in the Sokri sim: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Sokri/229/73/70

Okay, so I went ahead and put in an entry in the most recent fashion challenge. If you have a few moments, go take a look at everyone’s pics and rate them! I flaked out the last time, so I didn’t want to miss this one.
I had fun choosing the outfit for this challenge, and even more fun taking the pics in the setting that my friend Ranulph Graves (who, btw, is a pro at Photoshop and I keep pestering him about when he’s going to start a Flickr account) helped me find and set up.
I chose a leopard print strapless dress from Ivalde and paired it with red pailette earrings from Paper Couture and red slingback pumps from Shiny Things. To really give it an 80s Duran Duran music video feel, I used the Romance hairstyle from Cake. ^_^ Photos shot in Insula Maris.
The shot that I chose as my entry:
I actually like this shot better, but passed over it in favor of the previous since the outfit shows up in less detail and this *is* a fashion challenge :p
And here is Ran at Insula Maris… photos aren’t the only things he’ll shoot. :p No llamas were harmed during this photoshoot:
